Glycerin in Veg. oil
Sorry for the out of the blue oddball post about WVO. This topic has come up a few times in here and since I was writing this tounge in cheek primer for another board thought I would just throw it over here too.
Now the truth of the matter is There is no glycerine/glyceride in veg. oil. --->The assumption that glycerin is inside veg. oil is based on the idea that biodiesel makers remove "glycerin" from veg. oil to make biodiesel. Thus new to veg. oil folk assume "If you "remove it" then it must have been a component of oil in the first place " ..... Wellllll... yes and no. You see in the biodiesel game IT TAKES THREE TO TANGO....Why? Read on! To make biodiesel you realy only have to remove ONE thing from clean veg. oil. What you will learn here is that this ONE thing is NOT glycerin!!! It is this one thing that makes veg. oil thicker than diesel. Thusly removing it makes the veg. oil thinner and more diesel like. What this ONE thing is?? well it is a bugger to get out of the veg. oil. The smart scientist kinda folk realized that too easily remove it, you have to ADD two more things to the veg. oil that will stick/bond/combine with the ONE that you want removed. It combines in a big Tango mess ![]() ![]() ![]() Taking the Tangoed combination out (the glycerin) removes the ONE thing from the oil; as well as the two others you added. This makes the oil more diesel like; so much like diesel they call Biodiesel. Get it now! Now from this information you've learned that it takes ALL THREE TO TANGO (make glycerin) and only ONE of those things exist in the veg. oil. The other two are ADDED! THUS you now see that there can't be GLYCERIN in veg oil cause only 1/3 of what is needed to form it, exist in the oil in the first place. Confused yet? ![]()

Good point
Quote:
REACTION If anyone were inclined to look into it further - Transesterification rxn. Good batch of BioD. = you made a trans ester Bad batch of BioD. = you made a soap (IE soponification - water in the mix, incorrect ration of reactants etc.) What you learn in high school is correct - BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY ![]() |
