83 240D - blower quit working this morning
I was driving my '83 240D (120K) this morning, and I started smelling a funny, acrid smell (not unusual in Memphis as my drive takes me by a refinery and I get rewarded with a different aroma each morning) and shortly thereafter my heater blower quit working. It does not blow on any fan speed setting. I have not checked the fuse box yet. I have not had any fan problems yet on this car. I have had it since September and have been digging the bugs out of it as it sat undriven for almost 9 years before I got it. What is involved in removing the fan - I read that the blower motors are notorious for going bad? Is it a real PITA or not too bad? Does my car have a CCU, and could it have caused the blower to go bad? Any help on this appreciated - I am an under-the-hood type guy and haven't tackled a blower motor before in any car.

If that is the original blower it is about time for it die. Mine quit last year sometime. It gave me signs of dying bearings with squealing and slowing down. Check for fuses of course. One thing I found when mine first stopped was to turn the blower on full speed and slam your door real hard heh heh. It came back on every time except when it was dead completely and I got it replaced.

The blower motor assembly is located in front of the glove box. You get to it by removing the under dash plastic cover and it is a large black plastic assembly with a good size wire going to it. Getting it out is easy, a couple bolts or screws and the electrical plug, and that is about it. It is obvious once you get under there with a flashlight. All you need to take out is the working stuff, leave the bulk of the black box there (housing and connections to inlet and outlet ducting). Good luck, Jim
