ALDA - Adjustment Discussion

I have been thinking about adjusting my ALDA. My logic tells me that if I have smoke on hard acceleration, that smoke is fuel that has not burned. If that is so, then wouldn't the best adjustment be the exact point just before the cloud? Unless there is some benefit of pushing unburnt fuel through the engine and exhaust that excapes me.
