(chain) Breaking news!
Cross yer fingers for me...I'm moments away from performing an chainectomy on SWMBO's car, Lilly. I plan to replace the bannana slide at the same time.
More as it becomes available. And, no Greg, I won't be able to take pictures either...digital camera was KIA. -30-

Who would have thunk that dipping a digital camera in Lake Austin would have delivered a KO punch ?

Let us know how it turns out. Recently replaced my chain and the car runs much better.

This car already runs out really well...I hope putting a chain in it doesn't hose it up. Iwouldn't be messing with it except I think the chain is making, what I believe to be, an excessive amount of noise and has 265,000+ miles on it.
BTW- that bannana slide pivot is a PITA to remove!

Now I see what happened.... Rain was forecast.... you are a compulsive TWEAKER.... and even though you have a pocket full of the offset keys to bring your engine right back to specs... you could not resist rolling in a new chain just to keep you out of the house....
Yeah, sure.... a ROLLER chain making noise.... try again.... |

My 80 model had about 5 degrees of stretch and I could pull
up on a link on the cam sprocket about 3 mm. Car had 239K on it and ran quite well. It just runs stronger now! Especially at higher speeds.

I know that Lilly makes an unusual whirring noise (and Marlene doesn't) which sounds to me like a sloppy roller chain. I know for a fact that she has about 13° of elogation and I'm convinced that her funny 'lope' (that nobody else is experiencing) is due to a combination of the the elongation and the tensioner's inability to fully tension the chain at low (idle) oil pressure which, I think, allows the cam timing events to wander slightly at low/no throttle. All we have to go on sometimes is experience and gut feeling. In another life, I had an air-cooled Honda 600 automobile; it's cam chain was loose beyond belief and made a remarkably similar sound to what I'm hearing on this car. Eventually, the slack side sawed it's way through the side of the chain vault. That 600 could be fixed with chewing gum, bailing wire and JB weld (and often was). This one won't. My self-impossed goal is to have these cars dead-solid-perfect. I'm about to pull Marlene off the road for her long-awaited conversion to a manual tranmission and absolutely the last thing I want is to have Lilly puke a stupid $80 chain and cost me $2k right in the middle of major doins'on the other car.

Done!
No chain noise now either but, she still 'lopes' going to idle...so much for that theory. No change in power or throttle response (thank Gawd!)...all are still great! What a car!

RL - I would try adjusting the rack dampener bolt to get rid of the loping.

Something to keep you awake at night
As an former very serious motorcycle rider.... are you concerned with putting a new chain on the old worn sprockets ?

Chain Tensioner Addendum
To close out this story, you should know that I wasn't completely happy with what I was hearing under Lilly's hood even after replacing the timing chain. I realized that, at speed, I could hear a faint singing or whining sound reminiscent of an over-tightened timing BELT.
Off line, I queried Larry Bible who immediately recognized it symptoms of an improperly adjusted (too tight) timing chain tensioner. Last night, I pulled the tensioner, reset it and the rest, as they say, is history. Lilly lives to ride again! What I learned? The FSM is the right way to do things, don't think about trying to do these repairs at 11:30pm and if something is really hard to do on one of these cars, step back and assess the situation because you're probably going about it all wrong! Huzzay!
