starter compatibility

next weekend I hope to look at a 300D station wagon with a bad starter. I will try percussive persuasion to start it, but if that fails, would a starter from a 240D bolt in? I have a spare, and the car is too far frome home to want to tow. I also know it is not much fun to change a starter, but I dont want to pay for a new starter for a car I don't know if I am going to own. thanks

I think will fit, but I believe their is a difference in power output. If it's not too cold and everything else is in order it might work temporarily.

Good luck!

You did not say what year..... much easier with a non turbo ... but even on a 240 it is a PITA. Even worse for the five cylinder due to the access for the two bolts which face forward. I couple of long extensions with heft... like 1/2 inch drive and the proper hex head for the hex cap bolts holding it on. One major problem on the front is the support bracket... which bolts to the top and bottom rear bolts which hold the aluminum engine mount on the engine. The problem is the curvature of the cast aluminum piece.. which restricts access to the lower bolt. I finally found some space with a deep socket and 1/2 inch ratchet.. sticking straight up with a tire iron lug in stuck on it between the intake tubes.
I don't know that I would try this as a field replacement myself.
On the 240 you have to turn it around and take it straight up. You need to push the wires forward from the Battery and use wires to pull it out the small hole.

Where's the car?

If you can't do the starter in the field, I might be able to help you get it home...U-haul trailers aren't that expensive

You could always push or pull start it and drive home with out shutting it off .instructions for push pull starting an MB with automatic are in owners manual.would want full fuel tank if going very far............

If you look at a thread about Autozone starters a few weeks back, you will find a reference to the fact that the California 300TD (wagon) with the trap oxidizer has a different starter. The solenoid is on the bottom and not on the top. So it is possible that a starter from a 240d might not fit at all. The later turbo's do have a heavier duty starter but I suspect the early model will work if it isn't a California model.
I replaced the starter on my 77300d in less than an hour. On the 300's it ain't coming out the top without a lot of additional work. On the non-turbo it comes out over the right tierod with the wheels turned all the way to the right. I don't think it will come out that way on a turbo model. I think it has to drop down further back through the steering linkages.
The problem could also be a bad connection or a bad key switch. Look up the info on jumping the starter in the relay on the right fender from a thread in the last couple of days, it could save you a lot of work.
