Bad starter? '81 240D manual...

My "new" '81 manual 240D has "hesitated" a bit upon initial startup during the three months I've owned it. Originally thought it might be a battery issue, but this morning when I went to turn the key to the "start" position after the glow light wen out...nothing on first and second tries...not even a "click". THIRD try started as normal.

Manual...NO neutral switch issue like with an automatic. Where would you start looking for the trouble source? AND...can you start a manual diesel by "popping the clutch" the way you can a gasser?

Did a search, nothing I found QUITE matched up...your thought solicited humbly.

it sounds like the starter solonoid has failed. less than
$30. about one hours time to replace.

easy bump start. remember to use glowplugs.

If you read thru the threads, this is a typical problem on these vehicles. Mine does it. Been doing it for about 9 months. Hold the key in the start position. In really cold weather I have to hold it there for 4 or 5 seconds.

No clear explanation of the cause yet to my knowledge. Possibly a bad ground somewhere.

I've "jumped" across the solonoid with a screwdriver. Sure gets it hot though.

And I've push started diesels too often it works just fine, just the added syncronizing of the pushing and the glow plugs timeing out.

Use a higher gear though....

First can be a bit rough for push starting...

Third gear if you don't want your buddy's head through the rear window. A 20ft nylon tow strap doesn't take much room in the trunk, either.
