conversion to manual transmission
 

I've got a manual transmission 79 240D parts car and a 79 300SD with an automatic. Do I have everything I need to convert the 300SD to a manual transmission?

Good question.

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone here has attempted an auto -> manual conversion on a 116 chassis so there's some missing information whether or not the pedal cluster from a W123 chassis will fit (or work) on a W116. The flywheel, adapter plate and tranny from the 240 should fit the 300SD engine, no problem.

However, even if the pedals will work, some fabrication of metal pieces and bits (rear engine support, driveshaft, shifter rods etc) will be necessary.

There is an issue with the size of the pilot hole in the crank on some motors. TomJ I think it is has been this route as much or more than anyone, though his was a w123...

hmmmm.... if not having the right pilot bearing size in the crank means that I have to disassemble the engine and have it machined,....... that would kill the project. The other things like fabricating a transmission mount and installing a clutch pedal can be handled. I'll pull the automatic trans and measure the pilot bearing size.... what should it be? It would be nice if I didn't have to pull the manual trans to find out...

I'm pretty sure all the cranks are machined for a pilot bearing. It should be a 35mm opening.

Thanks to everyone for the tips. The project looks doable. I have a guy who owes me a transmission rebuild, but I hate to use the credit for this project especially when the car will probably run faster and more economically with a 4 speed. I'll post results and pictures in my website.
