83' 300SD car shuts off after letting off gas?

When I am driving as soon as I let go of the gas pedal fast for a sudden stop like a stop sign or stop light, my car would shut off. I am not sure why this is and it happens mostly in the summer. But I know it can be fixed so please help me.

My car has 156k miles

Questions, questions...

Does the car return to idle normally or is this the constant case that when you take your foot off it dies?

suggest you

check all linkages and the return spring on your emergency shut off lever.
Have a great day.

I 2nd whunters idea

Sounds like the spring on the idle adjust bolt might be bad and when it retrns to idle it goes beyond.
I take it the normal idle is correct when it does idle?

You can push the emergency stop and let off and see if the spring in the bottom of that bolt kicks it back up to the normal idle postiion. If not, the spring may be broken or just need lubrication.
it's on the engine side of the injection pump and has a lock nut holding it in place.

Mine was bad on the 1980 and would not allow me to use the emergency shutoff at all.

When I read the Subject line of this thread, I was sure that your car had an intestinal upset, causing it to let off gas!
I had the mental image of your MB diesel sitting in your driveway f@rting.
and then shutting down.

Take the car for a run on the highway. Get back to your house and leave it running.. it may be running a bit rough.

Loosen the locknut and turn the bolt on the back of the injection pump 1/2 turn in and the engine should smooth out. If it already is in all the way, you will need a new rack dampner bolt.
