Part fell out from under the dash, what and where is it from?
 

I was working on the interior of the 85 300D today and this rubber part fell out on the passenger side from under the dash. Does anyone have any idea what it's for and where it came from? I looked around under the dash and at the panels but I couldn't find where it needs to go. Can someone help with this?

It almost looks like weather stripping. Your photos are great, clear and helpful, but there is no sense of scale. How big is the piece?

There r 2 of these rubber plugs in the engine compartment. They r found beside the hinges (2x) that hold the hood.

I do not know if they r found under the dash.

The part is 2-1/2" tall by 1-3/4" wide at the widest section.
If it is something that belongs under the hood by the hinges then that makes sense why I can't seem to find where it would fit under the dash.:)

When i first picked up my 300d in texas, i saw these things sittin there in the engine compartment by the drains under the hood springs. They were just loose there, so i cant tell you where they are SUPPOSED to be:confused: I just threw them out.

I have a not so small collection of unknown parts from my four MB's...........

They protect your body from the hood springs in the engine compartment. They do fit loosly in the engine compartment. The smooth part goes towards the outside of the car and the pronged side is what hangs on the innerpanel between the spring and the engine compartment.
Why they were in the dash area I have no idea. I have had my 300TD dash completely out to replace the evaporator and those do not belong in the dash area.

Whenever the driver of ANY car finds a part which he cannot identify, he saves it----by storing it in the glove compartment, door pocket or other suitable parts bin. I prefer to store things like screws and bolts in the ash tray---and larger (bumper like) items in the back seat.

Given enough time, you will discover that several of these mystery parts seem to fit together...

Then, when enough mystery parts have been assembled, they will form into a whole new car which can be driven. The problem with these "new" cars is that they are difficult to register, but if you rummage through your glove compartment, chances are good you wil find some spare titles... and even some "proof of insurance cards" from 1986.

Right now, the unidentified parts in my glove box of my daily driver seem to go together pretty good---except they seem to forming a back hoe! This is very fortunate, since I've been planning on excavating for a new swimming pool. :cool:

Have any of you fellas tried putting together some of the mystery parts you've been accumulating? I'd sure like to hear about your engineeering success stories...

I keep collecting parts and hope to make a wife that will understand my need to always have at least 4 Benzs in the driveway in some level of disrepair.

whunter ,thanks but they all run ok the Gold SD needs tranny work ,but looking for a house right now so all projects are on hold. When I worked the front desk at import repair shop we had a whole shelf of mystery parts ,wonder if all shops have them?

HGV 4 is a nice number but 5 would be better.........

Thanks all, for the info on the part. It seems like the general concensus is that it is from the hinge area for the hood and it makes sense. Its good to know that its nothing really that important. I have no idea how it got inside the dash area.
