w126 turn signals not cancelling- can switch be repaired?

I finally drove my car for the first time on the open road last night ando found out that both turn signals are not canceling. I did some searching on this forum but haven't found much regarding this issue on an old w126 so much as ML cars.

I pulled off the steering wheel to take a look at the switch and I was unable to see any broken components. I have a few questions
  • Is it repairable/rebuildable? it seems almost everything in a w126 is repairable with glue and a soldering iron. I've repaired them before on other vehicles.
  • If it's not repairable- where's the best place to get them. Even autohauz wants $130
  • What's involved to replace it? Does the harness have to come out of the column!!? It's inaccessible from underneath the dash. Wouldn't be easier to solder a new one to the harness at the head of the column?

If you have the wheel off, a simple two screw swap out, two plugs also, shouldn't take long. No need to go underneath.
This one came out of my '82 300D, I have sold it.

My daughter's 240D has the same problem with the left turn signal. Her finger works just fine to cancel the blinking light.

Yep! If I can cancel it with my finger, I figure she can too!

The most common problem on the W126 chassis is a little plastic part on the steering column that cancels the switch. Easy to replace & NOT $$$

MB part number 126-462-00-51 with a list of $7.50.

What about the W123 chassis, 240D?

Thanks.

If I remember correctly Brian C had the stalk break on his 300SD, he replaced it with a new one. Said it wasn't to bad like $150.

Well my stalk, wiper switch and cruise switch are still up there doing fine. I'm hoping M.B. Doc's part is all I need because I can't see putting $150 into an $800 car just so the blinkers stop.

It was the '86 300 SDL. The stalk did not break. The washer circuit would not function.

So far the two distributors I spoke with were skeptical about the existence of such part so thanks for the number.

The parts dealership I had to order it from had a real superiority complex when I suggested there might be a part he was unaware of; but for that price I'll take a chance and report back here with pics if it goes well.

Check your state's inspection requirements.
A turn signal that won't cancel is cause for rejection in some...
