Question What's the best way to smoke a tailgater with a diesel?

I have tried to get a smoke cloud going just for the sake of practice but I can get nothing more that just small burp. I want to be ready when the next tailgater rides my rear. Has anyone any good tips on creating a good smoke cloud short of modifying my exhaust system to attach an auxiliary oil line? I've tried a method written by another member where you let off the accelerator pedal and pump it a bunch of times and then flooring it but it got me nothing. BTW, I have a '85 300D turbo diesel if this makes any difference.

If it is the CA model you're talking about I'd say the IP is lean. Lean for lack of a better word I guess. When I got my CA 300SD it wouldn't puff at all. My bro-in-law's '82 federal (400,000 miles) would blow me out of the water. I turned the pump up a little. It helped.

Vwbuge, I'm not sure what you mean by "turning up the IP a little". I have adjusted the ALDA to give me a little more power but that's about it. Aside from when its cold, it really won't smoke at all.

It's kind of funny that you guys are trying to make your cars smoke more, though I understand the reason. I've always tried to make my cars smoke less. Before installing a sophisticated smoke-screen mechanism, first make sure you're not driving like a grandma in the left lane.

Borrow my Volvo with a bad IP and a stuck EGR valve -- the car behind will vanish in the smoke. Truely enormous cloud of smoke, inky black. Probalby stank, too, but I never drove back to check.

A nicely clogged air filter will help smoke..

But seriously, there isnt a good way to make one smoke, mine does not do much either, you can only see it at night in headlights. I think ALL these IP's are lean across the fuel curve, and the ALDA only starts to get them the fuel they want. How many other twenty year old diesels do you know of that don't smoke? It's not normal in my opinion. I imagine they did it for emmisions and asthetics...

What I meant by turning up the IP was adjusting the ALDA. It did it for me. For some reason when I got my car it was REALLY slow. SLow to the point of being dangerous. I posted here and they directed me to adjust the ALDA. The car came alive. Since then I've installed a boost controller and had to adjust again. The car smokes a little more now.

A few gallons of the cheapest oil you can buy should do it.

My 83 240D has no trace of smoke going uphill on the freeway with pedal to the floor and headlights behind me. It's something I'm very proud of. My 2 other cars do smoke a little in those situations.

I was thinking other than Mercedes diesels, as they all seem to share this trait. I've been around diesels all my life and I've never seen one that smoked as little under acceleration as these do.

I tried to smoke out some punk in a Pontiac LeMans (a disgrace to the term Lemans I might add) that was tailgating me, no such luck. Instead I took pleasure in leaving him for dead on a twisty section of road. Gotta love the handling of these old cars, especially compared to a piece of crap like a LeMans.
