Used Peanut Oil in OM602?
I am an avid home deep-fryer (wings, fries, o-rings, shrimp, turkey, etc) and generate about 25 gal of used peanut oil per year.
When I owned my 84 300SD, I did not hesitate to filter that stuff well and put it in my fuel tank. I never put more than about a gallon in per tank. Never experienced any problems, but made certain I only did this when I knew the temp would not dip beow about 50F. It was a nice way to get rid of the oil (putting it in the trash seemed wasteful), and easier than going out and dumping it in the woods for the critters to enjoy. I now drive a 92 300D 2.5 Turbo. I'd like to continue the practice of discarding my old fry oil this way, but since the OM602 is a much more advanced design than the old OM617, I was wondering if I should re-start the practice. I'd filter the heck out of it and keep it at a ratio of 1 gal per tank. Anybody think this is a BAD IDEA? I do plan to keep the car for a long time, as it is truly a wonderful car to drive (have owned & loved an 85 300D and an 84 300SD) and don't wish to do anything stupid with my fuel system/injectors. I realize that by re-using the peanut oil as diesel fuel I am only saving about $41.25 (25 gals@ $1.65/gal), but that'll buy a couple nice bottles of Argentine Malbec. Whaddya think, I'm tempted to go ahead, but if anyone has solid FACTS that make this a no-go, I'd love to hear what you have to say. I wish I could discard my old Delvac 1 in the same way, but all that soot couldn't be too good (7500 miles worth per change) for the IP and injectors. If it were an old 240D with 300K on it, I'd probably dump anything I could get my hands on in the fuel tank just for grins. I just scanned thru your post and if you are using that 1/gal per tank in warm weather in your MB you should be just fine.
That being said, it would work good; with a higher probability, if you mixed it with some diesel first such as mix it in a 5 gal paint pail then put it into your fuel tank. (siphone it in?) (been following this sorta topic a few years now and use wvo fuel blends myself)

No good reason I can think of not too. As CG says, it may be best to premix it a little, but other than that it would be perfectly fine to use.

Just be sure to filter it at the temperature that you'll be using it. Otherwise tallow and other contaminants might harden in your filter on a chilly night.

IP lubrication
You will probably increase the life of your injection pump. I do not know whether you are on LSD or ULSD, but the IP gets some of its lubrication from the fuel. The peanut oil will improve the lubricating characteristics of the diesel fuel.

I've got the regular old #2 diesel that you can get everywhere in the states - 40 certane stuff. Not low sulfpher.
Well, I'm glad nobody put the kaibosh on that idea, as I have two gallons ready to go, Chris |

50% blend
I am running a 50:50 waste veg-oil : biodiesel blend in all of the MB diesel we have.
I "cold filter" the veg-oil to remove tallows. Day/Nite temperatures are cooling down, currently 25'C/15'C, but expecting 15'C/5'C in mid winter with some occaisonal <5'C nights. I have refrigerated the veg-oil and it is liquid (but viscous) at <5'C. The biodiesel is also liquid at 0'C, so there should be no "fail to start" issues. In '82 300D (wife's car), a small heat exchanger has been installed before the fuel prefilter.

Alternative fuel oils
I've just started filtering some used vegetable oil from two restaurants and two batches of peanut oil from a friend's turkey-fryer. I put samples in some small bottles in the fridge. I'm planning to blend with diesel #2 initially. I was surprised to find the peanut oil by far the most thickened by chilling to fridge temperature of 40 F. The sample of new canola oil from the pantry was the least affected. Before trying WVO in my '80 300 TD I want to inspect my injectors for comparison later.
I'm also considering burning used crankcaase oil (a little at a time). I know it's full of soot, but carbon is flammable, isn't it?? Check out the WVO forum at Biodiesel Discussion Forum. |

How much is a gallon of canola oil?
I just want to know when to switch over from regular road-taxed diesel, and when to plant some canolas in the back yard. ![]() Ken300D

1 Gallon of canola (rapeseed) or soybean oil off the grocery shelf will cost you about $5-$9 depending on where you live and shop.
I think rapeseed yields about 50 gallons of oil per year per acre. I believe Oil Palm yields close to 400 gallons of oil per year per acre. It's a tropical plant though.
