Trunk won't close
Somehow the trunk latch got in the locked position with the trunk open.
I have been messing with it off and on for a couple of days with no luck getting the latch back to its open position. I haven't found anything yet in the forum dealing with this. Is there some secret trick? Nothing seems broken and the vacuum works fine. ![]() Thanks, Jeff

I was reinstalling the lock after new paint. How the pieces go back isn't really obvious. To the left of that part of the lock, there is a rod that slides across. Is that what's stopping it from locking?
The part you show in the pic should just move out of the way. Make sure that it is moving freely. The key has to be turned a certain way for the push button to move the latch you're showing. If the key is in the locked position, pushing the button misses the latch and it doesn't move. Pull the part you show if what I said doesn't make sense. Your key isn't getting to the correct unlock position but the trunk should still close. Getting it open may be a pita. The vacuum moves the sliding bolt that is to the left of your pic.

Just yesterday mine started not latching as easily when I close the trunk. I am having to use the Key once the lid is down to lock it.

check your key lock cylinder
As Junkman mentioned it is possible that your lock is deadbolted in a sense. I can't say for sure on your model, but period wise, many German MB, BMW, and my w124s have a locked lock feature for trunk/tailgates. Typically this involves locking the cylinder to engage the power locks, and while the key is in the horizontal 9-3 position you withdraw the key. This locks the cylinder so that it stays locked regardless of the power/vacuum locks do. An extra security feature. To unlock, insert the key horizontally and unlock fully, this should Re engage the plunger and release the cam. Try with tge key, hopefully this is all that it is.
Edit: just tired on my wagon, the locking works as described above, but the key is withdrawn vertically, on the Cabrio it comes out horizontally, either way the key is required to unlock the trunk in this state.

solved
Ok, this turned out to be a very simple fix.
This is for Gen I W126 cars. Turn the key counter clockwise until it is horizontal. Then with a flat head screwdriver force the latch toward the rear of the car. It will then catch and you are done and back to normal operation. I still don't know how the latch got in the locked position with the trunk lid open.
