Noisy Rear diff

How easy/hard is it to change/replace a rear diff - noisy whiny swine...do specialists recondition them?

I have found that you always hear more rear end noise in a wagon as you are in an open box where a sedan the differential is more isolated.......

When I bought my car, the differential was whining loud enough to be annoying. I got it cheap because of it. That was 115K miles ago! I just make sure that it is full of lube and ignore the noise. My German immigrant mechanic, who used to work for Mercedes in Germany, told me that it would whine for a long time before it broke. He actually told me that many of them started doing it when they were nearly new.

how do you tell the difference between a worn diff and worn wheel bearings or drive shafts?

I have a noise from the rear - appears to be from passenger side. It increases with load i.e. no noise when I am decelerating.

The noise appears to get worse as the car warms up - i.e. after 10 miles it's definately worse.

Also, .... is it feasible to swop driveshafts over left to right hand sides of the car to get another x thousand miles out of them - I'm thinking the shafts will be operating on the other bearing side.

i was told by a vw guy that if you put a
bannana in a type 1"bug" transmision it would quite it down it has something to do with the patsiom. not actuly sugjesting it

Oatmeal and bananas sounds like breakfast food for somepeople. What's it like to change the diff on a 123 if one finds a suitable, quiet replacement? I've done it on my 124 and can offer advise for that car, but I'm not sure about the 123s.

I've heard that putting slick 50 in the diff will cure the whine within 1000 miles. I've been wanting to add some slick50 to mine... but I haven't found it yet. But I have only looked at one auto parts store... so maybe the others around here might have it.

There is a slick50 ' gear treatment'..... and I think it is available from the Enco catalog.... but surely you can find someplace local to buy it.. check with farm oil/fuel suppliers... and tractor supply places in the country....
