Opinions on oil filters?
I am planning my next oil change, as the lifters in this engine make some noise when it is cold.. so I will try switching to Mobil 1 or may be some other high tech motor oil, my question is what do you all use for filters? I have used Wix for years on the farm tractors, and all my other rigs, but may be that is a mistake for this engine. no point in putting in expensive oil and put the wrong filter in it. Also what about those bypass filters? I like the thought of not having to change oil quite so often. Do they work, or are there horror stories about them?
Thanks, jason

Always use Mann, Hengst, or Knecht for MB filters.

I have heard of Mann, but not of the others, is it mail order, or can they be had locally?

I usually stock up whenever I order stuff from Fastlane (at the top of the page). Shipping is free when you spend $100 or more.

For your American made vehicles and equipment, Wix products are top quality and really tough to beat. For things such as an MB, however, if you will remove one from a Wix, or other common US brand boxes, you will find a cheap filter made in Inidia or some such. Not always, but usually.

I looked at a WIX oil filter for the 617 etc. engine and it was a full flow only type filter, not dual stage. I would think dual stage would be best , but perhaps WIX has a "plan" I don't know about.
WIX has the rep. as one of the best filter manufacturers there is...I should contact them to find out what's up.

Brad,
Are you sure you had the correct filter? All the ones I have seen are dual stage filters. JD, Replace the "O" rings on the shaft of the filter cover. These "O" rings get hard, don't seal and air gets into the valve lifters. These "O" rings are availble from Fastlane also. P E H |

They looked up the WIX # for '84, 300D, and all the other dimensions appeared correct, except fan-folded pleats top to bottom. It was so strange, if nothing else, I should have bought it for a novelty .

Seen em. They look like the OEM break-in filter sorta. Scares me personaly, no thanks. On ocasion you'll see a Made In Germany stamped filter from STP or whoever in your local McParts store. More often India or some such, but I have bought several re-boxed filters here and there off store shelves. Never hurts to check.. ![]()
