Question Do you adjust your own IP or a mechanic does it ?

I don't know how difficult adjusting your IP is so I am trying to get a feel as to how many people actually do it themselves...

"Adjust it until the engine runs like cr@p, then turn it back a tad."

Just kidding.

I use the drip tube method externally. Internal, it's cake, just align the marks.

Internal timing?

It's pretty easy to get IP timing close with common tools - drip method for 61x, installation lock tool for 60x. If you mean take off the side plate and slide the thingies along the rack, I wouldn't eyeball that. You need to get the IP on a calibration bench to do that properly.

Question DIY diesel timing????

While I'm not sure about what he means, I've wondered since I installed my replacement IP how close I got it.

While I had the IP out, I was able to insert a tool, on the side of the IP, in the hole, to lock the IP govenor body in place while I put it in as specified by another forum thread, with the engine set at about 16 degrees ATDC, and my engine seemingly runs right on and although I may have some minor issues with adjustments to my alda and turbo boost, I got a smooth running engine that delivers 31+ mpg with decent acceleration.

I had planned soon after my IP installation to have it checked but I want to work out the other issues before I do so and because of the fact that it runs so well, I don't fear that it is too far from where it should be and I may have it right on the money. I do plan anyway to have it checked, or if I had a timing tool, as done similar with gas engines, I'd rather do it myself, but I do understand that there are other measures with the IP to consider
other than just turning the IP a few degrees one way or the other.

Any comments?

IP Adjust

I took my 240D to a local Mechanic (never used before) and asked about IP adjustment. He said the factory settings should not be messed with unless there is some reason to suspect it was disturbed. (like an accident or improper intervention) Is there any reason that the mileage/wear and tear would compromise the original setting? Any comments?

he is correct, however if you do not have knowledge available since day one, then check it..
