Now I see why we are having problems communicating. We're not on the same page.:D Sorry didn't take any pics of the camping trip, because it was nothing new. I have pics of my 230SL that i've rigged for camping, but I'd have to scan them. |
"The people go inside "
WHEW , that is a relief to know.... I was thinking you probably did not have any REPEAT camping guests otherwise... 230SL for camping ? Check out my Teardroptrailers in the yahoo groups section... |
I stand in awe of my Cambodian auto mechanics using service bulletins translated from German to English....or maybe they cut to the chase and take the attitude of the Russian who told me "We have trucks like this in Russia too..."
Suffice it to say that after they replaced my chain the car ran a LOT better. Maybe they changed the position of the seat.... Anyway, it's been fun, mainly because I have NO intention of ever doing this myself. |
Timing chain comments
On a related note, I had a mechanic recommend that the timing chain be replaced on a time interval in the case older but low mileage cars. Like the chain material would weaken with time in addition to miles. Any comments? The model in question is a 380SL, 1985 (back to the dual chain design)

I agree w/ Brian, find another mechanic! |
Going to revive this thread, found it in a search on OM617 timing chain stretch/wear. I went and bought a dial gauge with a magnetic holder, (magnetic base with long cable-type arm that tightens). My problem is that the cam interferes with the dial gauge, i.e., it's in the way. It seems like I would need a dial gauge with a longer (feeler/probe/whatever the heck you call it), in order to locate the dial part above the cam. There is not a lot of room above the valve spring for the dial gauge to reside, the cam and cam bearing tower are in the way.
I can post a picture if necessary but maybe someone knows what I'm talking about and can help. TIA. |
