Anyone here use a towing hitch...
...on their 123? I'd like to install one, for my nomad lifestyle. Thinking I might like to move somewhere else in the next couple of years, maybe go to law school. It would be great if I could tow a U-Haul trailer with my car and save $$$ on the moving van/truck rental.

I had a hitch on an 83' 300 wagon. Towed a medium sized UHAUL trailer for 1500 miles with the rest of the car completely loaded. Drove around 60mph with no problems.
I don't know about the sedans but it was really hard to find a place that would put a hitch onto the wagon. Uhaul wanted almost $500 to do it. I finally found a custom hitch shop that put a class 2 on it for under $200 complete. |

I had a trailer hitch installed on my 240D/77 a long time ago, I do have a small flat bed trailer, real small with 8" wheels, with that trailer over the years I carried tons of building materials to remodel my house.
One word of warning here, the hitch came from U-Haul, and they installed it for me, DO NOT let these jokers touch your car, while installing mine they butchered the electrical harness causing continuous electrical problems over the years and about two year ago I nearly had an electrical fire in the back of the car, fortunately it happened in MB shop and they replaced the harness from an older parts car. Thanks, Vahe |

I have a DaLan(?) class II receiver on my 83 300TD. Mainly it holds the tailgater basket we use to haul junk we don't want inside the car on long trips. I've pulled a couple of small trailers for short distances and have no doubt the car could pull 1500lbs of trailer as far as you were willing to drive it.
Recently I got a quote from a locally owned hitch shop for duplicating this receiver hitch set-up on SWMBO's 300D. It was going to run something like $215 or so installed.

I don't know about the legal implications but
I put one on my W201 for my utility trailer by a local place for about $175 (I did the wiring myself). They had a picture af one they had put on a Rolls Royce. I've had no problems, just have to keep track of the toung weight.

I have, what looks to be, a factory tow hitch on my wagon. It sorta goes under the bumper and is bolted to the body. It also has a wiring plug. It's in german but, the sticker on the tail gate says it has a 75 kg capacity ( I think)

I installed one a couple of years ago on my 240D from Advance Auto. I use it to tow a utility trailer (5x12). It bolts to the under side of the bumper and works fine for light loads less than 1500 #. I think I paid about $29.95 for it.
Good luck! ![]()
