85 300d safety

I love my 300d which I have owned for about 6 years. I have researched it's safety ratings and the are the lowest in the mid-size range. I have found this on the web, and also in some consumer reports from the early 80's. Volvo 240 got the top rating. I also own an 87 volvo 240 wagon. The mercedes feels just as solid but from the ratings I do not know what to think. Has anyone ever researched why the 300d gets such a poor safety rating? I remember Barbara Mandrell was driving a 300td when hit by a drunk driver. I remember the car in a commercial against drunk driving and it looked as though it survived pretty well.
