That is news to me...
I don't remember anyone having a bad experience rebuilding their's...
Can you provide reference threads for that ?
Maybe we can sort out WHY they had bad experiences....like not following normal mechanical rules, not reading the manual , etc...

They are straight forward fixes 98 percent of the time... which means the times when they simply need a new diaphram...

The actual rebuild is pretty easy. After it is off just bolt it to a piece of plywood with a socket under the roller to compress the piston, see

http://business.baylor.edu/Richard_Easley//autofaqs/Vacuum%20Pump/Rebuild_vac_pump.htm

Getting it off the motor is the tough part. I was lucky, I needed to replace the radiator as well so I had plenty of room to work. I would not want to try to get the pump off without at least removing the fan and fan shroud.

I am under the impression that there are 2 different types of rebuilds.

Partial - The diaphram, check valves, and gaskets.

Complete - The partial and also the roller and piston assembly.

I have no experience with the complete rebuild but the partial is pretty straight forward.

There are also two types of pumps...
and I think there is a way to put it on by turning the engine ... so that the rod is in the proper place without using plywood....
This is where the PerformanceProducts catalog's blowup line drawings come in handy.....

If you take it apart and there is a big tear in the rubber diaphram then probably you could just replace that and go on about your business....
If you take it apart and the diaphram is in good shape you need to do the back end...

That could still be a tiny tear in the rubber.. or mean your pistons and valves are worn out.... so I think until you take it apart you will not know....

One pump costs a lot more new than the other one...and one kit costs more than the other one...
