Grab it by the neck and yank it right out of the socket, probably at an angle is best.
On reinstalling replacement mirror, it will help to grease the spring loaded pins then insert one side and slap the other in place with palm of hand at the base. |

Yank it carefully!
The yanking out of the mirror used to be part of the standard sales pitch in 1980, I recall. A salesman in Orlando did that and explained the safety factor and that Jason Robards had a horrible neck injury from an Oldsmobile mirror going into his neck in a crash. I thought it was cool and stored the information away. Later, In Jacksonville, looking at a pretty Black/Tan 300D, I surprised my mother by yanking the mirror out. Some how, in my zeal, I managed to chip the winshield.... mother was not as surprised as myself. It was an expensive test ride, even with only paying wholesale for the replacement winshield. Yank carefully, my man... carefully. |

I pulled the mounting bracket loose on the parts car when I did this. I was more careful with mine.

I always liked Jason Robards rumbling gravel voice that made him famous, now we know how he got it...... Possibly the oldest of MB safety features ahead of its time is the detatchable mirror, going back to bath-tub Benz pontoon cars of the 1950's if not beyond.
And has anybody seen the fixed spike-star hood ornaments of Lincolns from the 1960s, like on the car that JFK was shot in? Gotta wonder how many pedestrians got skewered getting tossed over the hood on them. Here's another one.... the top and bottom padded edges that surround wooden dashboards and glove compartments on the amazing Finbody Benz's are precisely spaced so that a human head cannot collide with the wood. |

I, too, have yanked out the mounting bracket when trying to pull off the mirror. The $(*@ thing is so tightly attached to the mounting bracket I have had to use a hammer and large flathead screwdriver to pry them apart after it comes off with the mounting bracket. After the second time I had to use larger screws in the mounting bracket thanks to the holes being enlarged. I haven't tried pulling it off since, but it's possible i'll never get it off at all now
![]() If you have trouble getting the mirror off with the stalk, you can pull just the mirror part right off the stalk more easily than you can pull both pieces off the mounting bracket. Since it's just the mirror that looks like it needs replacing, that should suffice.
