Why would a car seem like it is shaking sideways ?

Hey...

I just changed my motor mounts and WOW what a difference. I barely get any shakes at all. However, I still need to change the transmission mount and I never changed the ENGINE SHOCK.

I feel as if the engine is shaking sideways now. Wondering if it is supposed to be that way or is something wrong ?

Kamil,

The engine shakes from side to side because it generates torque in pulsations at every power stroke and the torque, as well as the reaction, is a variable force around the crankshaft axis. This variable force results in a rocking motion of the engine on its mounts. At lower rpm these pulsations are at a frequency that is difficult to isolate or damp with just a rubber mount. Thus the hydraulic dampner or shock. At higher frequencies this phenomena is easier to isolate with rubber and the hydraulic dampner is less critical to your sense of the engine rocking sideways. Jim

Kamil,
I had the same problem with my 300D. I had the IP timing set and no more shake, just a low level vibration. After I deal with a bad injector and replace the engine shocks that should also go away.

Clean some of the horrible crud off the engine shocks if yours is half as dirty as mine were. I think its fairly likely that the SHOCK is OK but the elastomeric mounting at either end is shot. Look at the bottom rod and see if there is much relative motion to the shock body while a buddy rocks the engine side to side violently. It should be pretty obvious.
