240D broken camshaft

The car lot down the steet from me pulled in a 240D this morning. I know the guy, and stopped by at noon. It would not start, and had been towed in to his lot. I told him to change the filters. Still would not start. He looked into the oil filler cap on the cover, and saw that the camshaft is broken in half. He would probably give it to me if I wanted it. It is the same color, but rougher than my recently purchased 240D. It is an automatic, and mine is a manual. Should I even consider taking it??? Apparently it "died" at freeway speeds on the way to being traded in on another vehicle. Would that tear up the engine badly? It seems like it would do a lot of damage.

Thanks for the advice

George
