High vacuum at fuel cap
Every time I fuel the car when removing the fuel cap there is high vacuum. I know this common in gas vechicles , but never noticed it before on my diesels. Even after letting it sel overnite there will still be vacuum. Is this common and does it do any harm??

There was a problem with GM diesels tank vents not working correctly. The resulting vacuum actually collapsed the fuel tank in a few cases. Some guys were disassembling the caps and drilling very small vent holes to keep this from happening. I understand on gassers the importance of the Evap can and to vent it to that but on diesels I don't think it makes any difference. I can't see how high vacuum would be a good thing though.... RT

I looked on the bottom of the cap and there are 2 small holes on the outside edge. But it does seal tight. I have an extra cap so maybe I should drill out the cap so it vents. Very puzzling

Your vent tubbing is probably plugged up. In the mean time you are making the IP work OT trying to get the fuel up to engine. Ever try to suck a thick milk shake with a small straw, same thing.

I have the same problem with my SDL. I don't know if something is wrong or not.

Yes you both have problems that left alone can cause you be stranded on the road and maybe an expensive repair & tow bill.

Different car, but same problem. Until reading this post I thought that its normal.
Where (typically) is the vent tubing for the fuel tank? Phil

It's probably different from model to model, but on my 240 you can see it if you remove the trunk linner to get at the tank. on my car it's easy to get to, but I don't know about other's. You may be able to find it under the car and run a coat hanger up it to clear it. If that works it could save you a lot of time and work.

We use a speedometer drive cable to clean out hoses and especially sun roof drains. I've seen tiny little spider nests that held pressure up to around 50 psi before they finally blew out.

Took the cap off my wagon and no problem today with the vacuum yet. YES I did get stranded on #81 in PA. this week and got towed off the highway. Thought it was the fuel filter. Changed the filter and drove back 450 miles and the next day it did it again. I'm just running it local for the next few days to see if its OK
