The turbo on my 617.952 seized on me a few days ago. This motor is in my Hagglunds BV206. I am looking to get more power out of it so my questions are, should I put in a bigger turbo or get the old one rebuilt or find a good used one? Who makes the turbos for this motor and what is the part #? What does it cost to get a turbo rebuilt? If I put in bigger injectors and a bigger turbo how much more power can I expect or what else do I also need to do to get more power out of it?
Thanks, Ray |

First, what is a Hagglunds BV206, a snow cat?
Second, a larger turbo will not get you more power without more fuel. To add more fuel you will need to add an intercooler and monitor your exhaust gas temperatures. A turbo rebuild will cost upwards of $300 depending on if the turbine and compressor wheels can be reused. The stock turbos on these engines are made by KKK or Garrett. A holset HY-35 from a Cummins would probably work well and would put out more than enough air for a tweaked injection pump. It will bolt on to the exhaust manifold, but will require slight modification to the beginning of your exhaust system, and a silicone hose to connect the compressor outlet to the manifold. These turbos run about $250 on EBay. You could also consider bored out injectors. AFAIK nobody has tried using injectors that have been modified to flow more fuel, but I have a set that I will be sending in for this modification very soon. Edit: I want one!

BV206 pic
Thanks for the reply. Here a pic of my BV206 on the Pemberton Icecap where I blew the turbo. Let me know how the drilled out injectors work. I was talking to Metric Motors and they said the weak link on the engines was the con rods and the head sealing and might not hold up to to much increase in power. The BV206 ops man says the 617 puts out 125HP at 4350 RPM which I think is quite a bit more than the 300TD series states. I think the only difference between the two might be the cam.

Thanks for the offer Tony. I needed one pretty quick so bought a rebuilt one from a turbo rebuilder. When I get it back home I may take you up on that as I would like some backup parts on hand. How much would you want?

Nice picture, must have been a slow drive home with no turbo. The stock internals on these engines are good for a fair bit of power over stock, but when you are driving in remote locations like that I'm not sure how far I would want to push the envelope of power.

It still sitting on top of the Glacier. Even though it can still crawl there is no way I could make some of the hills going out and almost all my oil had shot past the blown seals. I rode a sled out then went back the next day to pull the turbo. Tommorow or the next day I will go back and install the rebuilt one.

Most T3s will bolt on to the oil lines and maifold, but only a Mercedes 617 T3 will plug in to the intake manifold in the stock way. Others can be made to work with some custom tubing.
