Rack limiter removed, but no smoke

I need a little guidance. I've removed the rack limiter on my '78 300D, but I am not seeing the black cloud or the performance boost I was hoping for. Could this be IP timing related as that is the one thing I haven't checked as far as fuel goes?

I used the soda bottle fuel to bypass the fuel tank, but still nothing. And the ADA is backed all the way out.

I have not done this, but is it necessary to also increase the travel of the rack by adjusting the external limit screw. (is there an external limit screw)

100% incorrect and that can lead to a runaway engine. DO NOT adjust the external linkage stop.

Its function is to limit travel of the internal linkage and prevent binding.

That quote should probably be made a sticky?

Well, turns out, it's putting out quite a bit of smoke. Not ridiculous ammounts (like what you would see from a tractor-pull), but it was mostly going into the bumper and depositing soot there. So the turbo went on earlier tonight.

I've known not to touch the throttle stop, so no worries there.

It's hard to give advice when the model of the engine is not specified. It sounds like you have a 617-912 that you are trying to get more performance out of. You've removed the rack limiter on the injection pump because that may allow more fuel. It sounds like later you thought you'd better install a turbo and were doing so pronto. If this is true then you are not going down a new path. There area many threads dealing with this issue with great advice and results. If the posters have some details listed in the sig then others will be able to give advice and comments that hit the mark.

Yes, it is the 617.912, and yes the rack limiter was removed for the turbo.
