4 or 5spd suggestion for a 1980 300SD (W116)
In the midst of redoing a 1980 300SD. Planning on putting some effort into it (certainly not to the extent Rudolf has!) but really would like to stuff a 5spd manual in place of the auto. Any suggestions??? Reading the various threads folks are all over the map.
Thanks!

Good luck finding a 5 speed that'll fit!

Yeah, pretty much the only real challenge is finding the parts. After that, it's pretty much plug and play. In North America, 5-speeds are very, very rare. A 4-speed that will bolt up can be found relatively easily from a 240D. But there would still be shift rod, driveshaft, pedal box, shifter issues to solve. But all these problems have solutions. Good luck!

5 speed will cost about $1500 give or take, when you can find them. The 380 was available in a 4 speed so finding the 300sd parts is easier than a 300d.

Dang, I had a 5 speed that would have bolted up (out of a W123). I was going to put it in my 300SD but I decided to sell it because I love the ease of the automatic. Actually, I know where a nice 5 speed is for sale in Germany if you've got $1,000 and money for shipping. I think the same guy even has a W116 clutch pedal set.
