Drawing a little knowledge from the 12v cummins world yes the over flow valve works making the spring stronger. I would add that if you modify an air dog fass or the like lift pump you can set the psi of feed to w.e you'd like simply by changing the spring in the bypass of the pump. P7100s like 45 psi plus 60 is better. Just my .02 you will also have 2 huge fuel filters on water separate the other a 2 micron folter

So, this is my bolt/banjo fitting. Looks like I'll need to replace the bolt or heavily modify it. Anyone ever cut one of these apart?

Mine on the 602 was that style as well. Strange because the '78 came with that style but all later 617s I've seen had the openable style. I actually had a spare one so I put the new spring in and threw it in there on the 602. Seems to be working fine so far.
Don't think you can successfully open up that one and get it put back together easier than you could probably find an openable one. |
I wonder if the size/thread, etc.. are compatible with one from an OM617.

It's M12x1.5mm threaded. The OM605 with direct injection (290TD) and inline pump uses it as well; the 290TD was also produced with a distributor pump. It will also fit in a OM615 or OM621. Applications include: OM616, OM617, OM601, OM602, OM603, OM604, OM605, OM606, OM662 as they all have the same valve body. |

My bad for not posting this sooner.
Clarification. I am currently only selling the spring. My marketing strategy did not antcipated rifling through so many OFVs. When I sell an item, I send an invoice to the customer. That protectes everyone in the transaction. The invoice has the following language: "Overflow Valve Spring - Mercedes-Benz, application OM617.9XX Engine or similar application. The OFV spring is designed to correctly increase PSI and resulting fueling with power / performance increase. Buyer should either re-use the aluminum washers - sealer rings from fuel line or install new washers per FSM to avoid leaks. OFV spring is simple to assemble / install. Install should take approximately 5 minutes in OM617 applications. The Buyer must have a rebuildable OFV (not staked in the corners)." The line item says: "Overflow Valve Spring" So, to clarify, I am only selling the spring. The buyer will need to rebuild his or her's OFV. The OFV needs to be the rebuildable type, i.d., not the type staked in the corners. I added the bold to this post (it's not bolded on the invoice). Hope that clears up any confusion. When I get more OFVs, I can sell the entire component, but the price is $40 shipped CONUS whereas just the spring is $35.00 shipped CONUS. |
I bought and installed one of these springs from Greazzer in our OM617 swapped CJ7, very happy with the product! The motor winds up faster, and seems to be more responsive as a whole and what *feels* like more power. Will be buying another one of these for my OM603 sedan. Very happy.

How do I tell if I have a rebuildable OFV? And where on the pump is it located?
|
My apologies for being late in responding ... moving a little slower than normal.
The OFV looks like a large bolt behind the IP (in-between the IP and block), towards the front moresoe than rear. It's very easily accessible on the OM617 engine. To remove, you'll need a 17mm wrench. When looking at the OFV, it will appear to be a 17mm "bolt" with a smaller 14mm bolt thru the top. So, a bolt within a bolt. It's actually a banjo bolt with a fuel line connected to it. The 14mm "cap bolt" threads down into the 17mm banjo bolt around 1/4" and it holds the spring and at the end of the spring is a small ballbearing. If you remove yours, don't lose the aluminum or copper sealing rings. Overall, you can remove and rebuild the OFV and re-install in about 5 to 10 minutes max on the OM617 engine. |
If you take a look at the very first post, post #1, to this thread, you can see a picture of what a rebuildable OFV looks like.
