The '87 (USA model) 300D with OM603.960:
original head casting 603 016 014 01 AKA: #14 head There were several casting updates, AFAIK the last update was 603 016 022 01 aka: #22 head

In clarification for the original questioner and anybody who later reads this thread, MB part numbers almost always contain 10 digits in the XXX XXX XX XX format. Occasionally there will be a letter preceding the 10 digit number(an "R" on the original #14 cylinder heads) and even once in a while an extra digit or two (sometimes in parenthesis) that's mostly on older marked parts though. So there would be no 014, 022 or 0XX on any casting the original questioner or anybody else looking for that particular info, will find. |

Oops. Right you are.
I should be embarrassed, being a Daimler supplier and all ... I know better!

It with be marked in the aluminum casting as raised lettering reading -
R 603 016 14 01 with a tiny Mercedes star right after that string of numerals. |

Not sure of '86, nor of Euro. I would guess the same as MY1987 USA model: #14. This is a turbo head, if yours is not turbo it would NOT be #14.
