Hey John,

Ha, the unimog, yeah, it had crossed my mind if we were going to do any beach cruising since I can fit 12 in the back. I really don't drive it anywhere though except for parades and shows. I tow it everywhere else on the trailer and since Diesel is like 3.49, getting it there and back would be pretty expensive since the truck only gets 11 MPG while towing.

So I think it'll just be the 300. If I can get off early on Friday, I might just come down that afternoon.

land sea air 03-04-2008 05:10 PM

well it looks like my certainty has reversed itself, money constraints and the need to spend time with my new car have made me pretty sure that I won't be able to make it :(

powerpig 03-04-2008 10:04 PM

I can get us rooms at the Holiday Inn Express for around $65 or less per night depending on attendance. Please give me a final, for sure head count and I'll take care of it.

pmckechnie 03-05-2008 07:32 AM

pmckechnie and wife fri and sat.

Lunagen Labs 03-05-2008 10:41 AM

We settled on the weekend of the 23rd, right? I'll be there for Friday and Saturday as well.

pmckechnie 03-05-2008 12:30 PM

You know, I just read through this thread and didn't find anywhere that the final date was ever finalized. We planned to come the weekend of the 15 & 16. Brian seems to be coming the 22 & 23. When are others planning on coming? Or, did I already miss it?

Paul and Judy

Lunagen Labs 03-05-2008 01:41 PM

Oh, guess I hadn't looked at the poll for a while, the 15th is clearly in the lead, sorry for the confusion. But yeah, someone should make it official. My schedule is very flexible so nothing changes for me.

ImBroke 03-05-2008 06:51 PM

Me and Deb will be there on the 15th, and spend the night. What time are we meeting down there and where?

I'll be there Friday night the 14th. I'll need a room that night and on Saturday night for myself only. Single room, single bed, no smoking is fine.

Thanks!

Can somebody please, once-and-for-all define the date and when to get where and so forth, just so I can be sure before I commit? Thanks.

Edit: Forgot to ask, are diesels invited? :D

Edit again: The reason I ask is that it doesn't seem like too many people have discovered this is going on - I mean, several have but not nearly the NC population on the forum. Maybe this should be made a Sticky on the tech help forum and/or the diesel discussion forum since there's official dates decided and everything, just to let everybody know who doesn't come over to this board often. I personally found it by accident and didn't know it was here.

ImBroke 03-06-2008 01:38 PM

Kevin, can we still use our Priority cards? Hope so, I like building up points.
Busted, the dates are the 15th and 16th. Maybe the reason it's not a sticky was because people were complaining that the date was too early, whining about it being windy and such. Us hard core people aren't going to let some wind stop us from having a GTG.
I have the feelers out for places to eat, so far it's possible for the Black Pelican or "Eat and get the hell out". I'll know more tomorrow.

Dee8go 03-06-2008 01:42 PM

Is "Eat and Get the Hell Out" really the name of a restaurant? Sounds relaxing . . . .

Oh, i can certainly understand that - just seems like a get-together full of forum people would be more easily facilitated if said people knew about it ;)

pmckechnie 03-06-2008 03:24 PM

I agree, we would have more people come if more people know about it. It took me a while to find it again after it was moved. A little trick I learned a long time ago. If someone keeps coming over to your house and you don't care for them, just move and don't tell them. It works almost every time.
I hope that is not the case here. HaHaHa.:):):)

Dee8go 03-06-2008 03:43 PM

You're right about that. I've been looking for Mom and Dad for years, ever since that day I went to school and came home only to find the house empty. They moved away and forgot to tell me . . . .

Dee8go 03-06-2008 03:44 PM

. . . I'm sure they had a lot on their minds. Yeah, I;m sure it was just an oversight. Although it HAS been twenty years . . .

Eat and Get The Hell Out is a great place especially for Brunch, Sam and Omie's is also a relaxed place for dinner/drinks if you are south enough, it's by the split. Wish I was going I do :(

ImBroke 03-06-2008 07:21 PM

We're gonna have a good time, for sure.

I think I saw a movie about your life, it was "Joe Dirt"

Johnhef 03-06-2008 09:44 PM

definitly, feel free to repost on any relevant parts of the forum, or PM other area members if you know that they don't know you know about it, ya know? ;)

Dates are definitly set, March 14, 15 and 16. A few of us are arriving the evening of the14th so there will be others there if you plan on coming out friday.

For eats, I suggest RV's or tail of the whale.

Johnhef 03-06-2008 10:05 PM

The closest H.I. express I see is in Kitty Hawk, is that the one?

That would be my guess but I don't know.

Just theoretically, what might a person miss out on if they came down friday evening, did everything Saturday, and headed home Saturday night. Anything exciting planned for Sunday yet?

ImBroke 03-07-2008 07:33 AM

Any interest in the Currituck Lighthouse? The Queen Elizabeth in Manteo?

If some people are going to be there on the 14th, I guess I"ll just meet you at the hotel?

I think that's the H.I. Kevin was talking about.
3919 N Croatan Hwy, Kitty Hawk, NC

pmckechnie 03-07-2008 05:23 PM

I checked the map and come up with some suggestions.
Bodie Light house 20 miles south
Hatteras Light House, 60 miles south
Currituck Light House 25 miles north
Wright Brothers Park 5 miles south

As far as places to eat, I can't help.
Our plans for Friday night are to rest up after our 8 hour drive.
Our plans for Sunday are to make the 8 hour trip back home.
Saturday is open.

Wright Bros --> Bodie --> Hatteras seems like a fairly obvious move, based on that information. Probably still time to go the other way as well but who knows.

Johnhef 03-08-2008 08:03 AM

Yeah, my original thought was to hit at least the two lighthouses (bodie and hatteras) on the saturday drive, we can get lunch down at hatteras and head back up. Anyone know if they still let you up in the lighthouse? I havent been there since they moved it.

Dee8go 03-08-2008 08:28 AM

I'm pretty sure you can go up in the Curritck lighthouse still. I know you can't in Bodie, but not sure about Hatteras. I haven't been there since they moved it either.

Dee8go 03-08-2008 08:31 AM

I just checked. It is open from April to mid-October, so I guess you won't be able to go up in it this trip. That is good exercise, though!

Mark DiSilvestro 03-08-2008 10:45 AM

I just found this thread and would like to be there too. Not certain if I would make it Friday PM or AM Saturday.
Any further details? Do we need to contact the motel / make reservations individually?

Happy Motoring, Mark

Johnhef 03-08-2008 04:08 PM

I had forgot about the Currituck one, I was there a few years ago as well. Or was that the one in Corolla? it was an all brick one.

pmckechnie 03-08-2008 04:18 PM

Same one.

Johnhef 03-08-2008 06:11 PM

duh, thats right, a simple map would have shown that. forgot theres only 4 main ones- currituck, bodie, hatteras and ocracoke

Lunagen Labs 03-08-2008 07:56 PM

Checking out some lighthouses would be cool even if we can't go in them. Although that would be something interesting that I haven't done yet. I always like to find old buildings, houses, factories, mills and stuff to take pictures of. Is there much of that in the area? Some of it could make some nice photo-ops.

KarTek 03-08-2008 09:15 PM

North Carolina lighthouses are:

Hatteras - 198'
Cape Lookout - 169'
Oak Island - 169'
Currituck - 158'
Bodie Island - 156'
Bald Head Island - 110'
Okrakoke Island - 75'

Johnhef 03-08-2008 11:51 PM

if theyre not gone by now (they probably are) I remember seeing some unfortunate beach houses that were in the process of being swallowed up by the ocean last time I was there. I believe that was along 12 near the black pelican.

ImBroke 03-10-2008 10:17 AM

Any interest in Fort Raleigh? 1584-1590 stuff.
Looks like the bridge on 12 going to Ocacroke is going to be closed for repairs.
I'm bringing my laptop, so hopefully I can download pics from the camera and post some up while we're still down there.

Lunagen Labs 03-10-2008 11:24 AM

I'd be interested in about anything historical. In fact, Sunday I might drive up to Norfolk, VA. My family on my dad's mom' side lived in the area from about 1630-1790.

Hopefully there's a spot to do some detailing on the car. I'm going to polish it up good before I leave, but it'll probably need a good bath by the time I get there.

captainmonk 03-10-2008 03:53 PM

boy i'd love to be there.
OOOOOOOOOOO and BTW in the hundrds of times my boat has gone into hatteras inlet i've never seen a bridge to ocracoke you better bring ferry fare

KarTek 03-10-2008 04:20 PM

I think he's talking about the Oregon Inlet bridge. If so, that pretty much restricts us to the Northern areas. Also, Last time I was there, the ferry to Okrakoke from Hatteras was free.

So, for lodging, do we have to do anything? Just show up and get a room? What are the plans?

Thanks!

ImBroke 03-10-2008 05:00 PM

I can't find where I was again, but you're probably right.

I did just find this!!!!!

March 15
The Shamrock Car Show

Lunagen, we're headed back Norfolk way afterwards, want to caravan?

865sp300e 03-10-2008 09:42 PM

I will be in Avon, NC this weekend (just north of the Hatteras lighthouse), although I will not have my 300E with me I would like to meet you guys. Hopefully you will know when and where you will be over the weekend. I will not have a lot of free time but it would be nice to at least say hello.

By the way, the Oregon Inlet bridge is under discussion to be replaced but I am not aware of any total closings.

Cape Lookout down near Beaufort is the one with diamond shapes on it. There's also one called "Old Baldy" way down on Bald Head Island just South of Wilmington.

Johnhef 03-10-2008 10:52 PM

I'll post my phone# before I head out thursday incase anyone needs to figure out where we are to meet up, or you can PM me and I'll send it to you.

I would like to see the Ocracoke lighthouse if there's time, thats the one I haven't been to yet- made it as far south as the ferry to the island.
http://www.itpi.dpi.state.nc.us/Caro...3/ocracoke.JPG

Also I remember at Bodie there is a visitors center and a long walkway through the marsh areas.

captainmonk 03-11-2008 01:22 AM

i was talking to a friend on a cell as he drove over the bridge yesterday

Well, I could have been wrong. I was on the site visitnc.com, and they had something on there about a bridge on rt 12 going to be closed on the weekend for repairs.

KarTek 03-11-2008 07:59 AM

Anybody know about the lodging plans yet? I know where we're staying but do we call and book ourselves or is that being taken care of?

As far as Okrakoke is concerned, figure about 45 min from the time you pull into the que for the ferry to the time you exit on the other side and then a 12 mile drive down the island before you reach the town. I used to spend at least one week on the island every year so I can help navigate the town and find a place to eat if the time is right.

Johnhef 03-11-2008 06:29 PM

It's taken care of- Kevin will be posting the exact details later today.

PaulH 03-12-2008 10:46 PM

Darn.....

Guess that I'll miss another GTG! My daughter is visiting this weekend. Everyone drive safely and have fun.
