Drove down to England from Scotland on Monday and came back with an E280 Auto estate/wagon. Only 50k for a 94 is pretty good, I thought. She is a pretty basic spec, sadly, so I will need to give her some extras over the next couple of years, but she has the basics I needed (7 seats, tow bar, roof bars, etc.). I will start with a decent ICE system as the original basic Blaupunkt is still residing in the slot. CD autochanger definitely required.
My word, that 2.8 dohc is sweet! Smooth as silk and quiet. It certainly cruises effortlessly, but (as a new MB driver) the throttle sure needs a hefty shove - will take some getting used to.
She handles well, and the ride is pretty good - not quite as good as a hydropneumatic Citroen, but you can't have everything, right?
A couple of things, however. The speedo needle wobbles a bit up to about 30mph when it settles down - any ideas? Rear light failure warning light has illuminated a few times at engine startup (stays illuminated for 30 secondws or so), but all the rear bulbs seem okay. Faulty relay?
Fuel consumption on my trip back to Scotland was okay (30mpg) but it will be a shock after my previous diesel, we're used to 50...
