I'm looking to purchase an air compressor capable of running some decent tools for home automotive usage. What should I look for and what should I avoid?

An electric five horse power vertical tank compressor will do anything needed in a home garage environment. 240 single phase shouldn't be hard to run. Anything smaller and you'll regret it when the air tools come out.
