He said it best. You want a reliable car that's easy (and relativey inexpensive to fix)? You want an 80's 300D, or 240D. Heck, even a late 70's one isn't too bad (78, 79). But I say stick to the range of 1980-1985, and a Turbodiesel if you can. Best cars I ever bought.. and relativey cheap too.

Looking

I bought an '81 300SD (W126, 5 cyl turbodiesel), which is bit more luxury than the 240/300D (W123) It had 197k when I bought it and made the necesarry repairs. It has 215k on it now with no problems, Up to 100 miles a day round trip commute with mixed driving and 28-30 mpg. I would go with the W123 or W126 Turbo diesels. Plenty of parts and knowledge around for these. The '86 and '87 300SDL is a W126 with 6 cyl turbodiesel. These have more compex engines, electronic idle control Trap oxidizer and head problems. Stay away from those. Ditto for the '87 300D Turbo, a W124 one-of with the same 6cyl. turbodiesel and problems as the '86 & '87 300SDL.

Good hunting, juergen
