Advice on buying used...

I'm looking to buy 83-85 300D - got few prospects to look at in town, but I never bought a used car before so I could use some advice so I don't get taken... If I decide to go for it, what should I do:

1) Make an offer contingent on inspecton by qualified mechanic - if sound, make final offer. (Not sure I want to put any money down before the inspection...)

2) Copy the VIN number from the vehicle and run CARFAX on the car

3) Compare the VIN from vehicle to the one on the tile.

4) Pay the guy and get a receipt from the seller and have a witness to the transaction

5) Transfer title to my name the same day...

Anything else?

Thanks,
James

Just find a independent Mercedes/German car repair shop in town, spend 100$ and have them check the car, then pay the guy and have him sign the title and hand write a bill of sale.Simple.

Question Question on missing title...

Going to see a prospect vehicle today - if the car is how the guy describes it I may be interested... It's a blue 1984 300D 157K mi - $3K.

When I asked about the title he started telling me this long story... : the vehicle was his father's who passed away. The son is selling the car, but could not find the title for it. He had the car towed to his warehouse and had the dealership issue a 'bill of sale' (not sure why?!)...

Apparently he went to DMV here in Denver and got some type of paperwork from them - he says that all I need to do is fill out the paperwork provided by DMV and have the new title re-issued in my name...

Believable - how should I proceed?!

If vehicle is good, I plan on giving him 'earnest money' and making the final payment contingent on successful acceptance at the DMV on Monday...

Thoughts?!

Have him go to DMV and issue the title in his name, then reasign it to you...if you have to pay a couple of extra bucks for that,do it,or,best thing is :go to DMV with him.If they say the paperwork is fine(they have to accept it),then pay the guy and wait for your title, you are shure that everything is OK.

When I bought my 108 here in Denver the PO had lost the title. I had a document that I needed to fill out and take to the DMV for a reissue but he found the title before I had to worry about it.

I think 92300SE's advice is spot on. Have him get the title reissued in his name and sign it over to you. Do you really need the headache of owning a car you potentially cannot register?

Tears...

Well, it looks like I've missed a good one... the seller said last night he got 30 calls on this car (he was shocked...) - was going to meet with him this morning but he never called - guess he sold it to a higher bidder... too BAD it was a nice 300D turbo - just like I wanted....

The search goes on...
