'83 300SD for parts - available soon

As soon as I get another car, I will want to get rid of the '83 300SD. Hopefully I'll get something in the next month or two.

It's been hit in the rear. It would take at least 3000 to make it close to right again, so it's not going to happen. But it does still track straight. Of course, I don't want to sell it as a driver. It would never be worth what it took to fix it.

The interior is rough. The leather has numerous holes. Plenty of other problems in the interior. The climate control has a mind of its own when it comes to the cabin fan and the heat. The 134a-converted AC works OK when the cabin fan decides to come on. The heat works as long as you don't let it shut off (by turning the dial down). Once it shuts off, it won't come back on.

The whole exaust system is trashed by the rear impact. I don't think there are any usable parts in it.

However, it does have plenty of good parts. The engine runs strong. Supposedly it was rebuilt less than 100K ago, but I have no specifics. It gets about 27mpg without the AC running. The transmission doesn't slip and shifts very well. It even has about 50% tires on the 14" rims. The motors in the seats work as well, although the switches are broken - you have to actuate them with a fingernail or the tip of a pen. The RF window is inop, but the rest work fine. Sorry, no OEM radio.

Price? Cheap. If you're interested, make an offer. If you're comfortable driving without plates (I'm keeping those, of course), you can drive it away. Remember, it's not available yet.

Edited to add: I should mention that this car is near St. Louis. That probably matters.

Complete edit here. I had to be reminded that the driver's seat cusion does not sit quite straight. I've barely noticed it, and haven't driven the car all that much. So that's out. Sorry.

Cheap is make an offer. I don't expect much, but I do expect to not deliver the car from my driveway. The buyer must come collect the car.

I just bought its replacement today, a 2006 Jetta TDI. I don't need to unload this one right away, as the insurance payments aren't very high on it, so you (all) have time to consider whether you can profitably take it off my hands. I don't want to send it to the crusher. It has lots of problems, but also lots of good parts, including a good running engine.

I'll try to get some pictures posted of the car soon. I'll also try to compile as complete list as I can of its problems (i.e., parts you can't recycle).

Some images.

I didn't focus very well on that thermometer, but it's nothing to brag about. It was reading 70, and it was about 90 out. The AC does work, but not too well. Perhaps some more 134a would help. Or using any good parts on another car. The compressor is quiet.

Notice the minor rust on the left front fender, and the lack of space between the right rear door and the rear fender panel.

Yet more...

Two, count 'em, two spares! They're nice to hide all that damage visible in the trunk. The trunk lid now leaks due to the deformation of the trunk, but the seal is less than two years old. But I glued that seal in fairly well, so it probably won't come back out. Oh well, it wasn't very expensive.

Still more...

Here you can somewhat see more of the visible trunk damage. Also the seats. Nothing great on them all around.

The exhaust was hard to photograph, but perhaps these two pictures give an idea. The pipe is bent badly just in front of the rear muffler, but the flex pipe is also trashed. I fixed it with some soup cans and RTV on the inside about a year (and 3K miles or so) ago, and it's holding for now. But don't expect it to pass any state inspections!

Just a few more.

The last two are with the engine running. The tach is flaking out just now (it occasionally works), so you'll have to take my word for it that the first is at idle, and the second at about 1000 rpm, which brings the oil pressure to 3.

I got a few PM's about this car when I posted the message, but unfortunately I was sent out of town for work right about then. I just got back.

The car is available. I would prefer someone who doesn't want to drive it to the coast (either lives nearby or has a trailer), since the car hasn't been run much at all since we got the Jetta.

Cheap really means cheap. I want more than a junkyard will give, but that's about it. $100 sounds good, but you'll have to sign a bill of sale stating that the car is being sold as-is for salvage, to protect my butt. The title is clean, however. I don't want to send it to the crusher if someone can use or sell the engine and transmission or other parts. I'm not in the business of dismantling cars for money.

Matt,

Where are you specifically? If the car drives and you aren't too far from Millstadt, I could probably take the car off your hands.

Tom
