Now I REALLY went and did it.....I need an AMG 12-step program

Before I even have my grubby paws on my 1990 560SEL AMG 6.0 DOHC from Japan (it's coming soon, I swear), I saw this and HAD to have it. So I bought it:

http://168.144.121.218/amg/amg.html

I think POS did a bunch of research on this car in the past, which of course I found after I bought it. But overall, I think it's a one-off open checkbook car. I am not expecting it to have been built by AMG; that's my 560SEL. But it does have all the right parts, and clearly was not done in a backyard somewhere.

It's going directly to Jonathan in Atlanta, who might be even more excited than me to see it! Once it's running right, I will fly down and drive home assuming I do not lose my license on the ride home. 350HP of AMG 6.0 litre V8 in a W201 chassis is my kind of car. The motor takes up so much space that the A/C is in the trunk!

Don't tell me what an idiot I am, that the miles are not correct, that it's a hack job, or that it was only worth $5K tops. You're talking to an addict....that will all go in one ear and out the other.

Wish me luck!

Bruce

Looks like a SOHC engine. I would've expected to see a DOHC (doesn't mean it's not AMG). Nice looking car.

Good Luck!

Yes, it's a 6.0 SOHC. Actually, I prefer that for this car. It's plenty of power, and hopefully none of the leaking/warped head issues of the DOHC.

I had a 6.0 SOHC 560SEC, and it screamed...plenty of power at any speed.

I have enough to worry about with the DOHC heads in my 560SEL!

Good luck Bruce.

I think it looks cool.

Should you be concerned with this getting damaged by road debris? It looks like it's out in harm's way.

Is that a trans cooler or the a/c evaporator?

I will say this: It's VERY unique! And I would not mind driving it one bit!

However, I would shudder at maint costs...

It wouldn't be the evaporator - would be the condensor. I thought originally it might more likely be a tranny or engine oil cooler. Now I'm thinking A/C condensor, since the pics of the motor don't show a condensor in front of the radiator.

I would hope that there's a pair of small fans on top of the coils - with the proximity to the exhaust system, it's gonna get REAL hot up under there while sitting in traffic.

OTOH, if it is an engine or tranny oil cooler - first, that's simply SUICIDE - take a severe road debris hit and dump oil on the road in front of your rear tires - talk about deadly oversteer.... Additionally - same issue as for the condensor - it's gonna be terribly hot up under there unless the car is moving pretty quickly.

If it's a condensor, I'd work on building a shield to deflect the heat from the exhaust...

And that exhaust - for an otherwise craftily handled conversion, it looks sloppy. I'm a bad welder and I think I could do better than what I saw in the pics.

Otherwise - mega-cool car. Assuming you can keep rear tires on it...

Wow

I cannot imagine shoving an engine that big into that car. It must run like a r@ped ape!!

One thing I did notice was that there is no additional bracing. I would be worried about the engine torque twisting the body.

Hello insanity! I loved that car when I researched it Bruce, but me being in Texas and that car being in New Hampshire or the like, I just couldn't take the risk. Love that screaming red.

What is that thing that looks like a radiator coil on the bottom of the car? Is that part of the AC?

I ran the vin on the MB russian site, nothing about it came back as spectacular, regular 190, Interior was apparently Mushroom MBtex at some point. Nice conversion of course.
