I would be curious to know how recent the accident was. If it was in the last few years, it was likely totaled not because of extreme damage, but the plummeting value of the car. As long as you're not planning to re-sell it, I would take a second look. I would want to see the documentation to back up the mileage, inspect the damaged area very closely, and look for clamp marks on the bottom of the car from a straightening machine.

Well Tyler the only issue with this is that I am 700 miles away I am still debating if I should take the risk and just fly over....at the end of the day is just some $120.00 one way ticket

There are plenty of good NorCal members that would probably enjoy looking at a car with someone else's money. JimB, Turbobenz, and Iwrock come to mind.

At a dealer though, so probably wants lots of money. I've seen lots of low miles mint condition 300SE and SELs lately. They seem to be the easiest model to find in well preserved condition.

Nobody uses their headlight wipers in So.California.

I looked at that dealers inventory and determined 2 things. One, they have a lot of nice cars. And B, their prices aren't too bad for what you're getting.

Murrietta and Temecula have been very hard hit by the real estate depression. Lots of people hurting, going bankrupt, etc. I imagine a lot of them are letting go of their old luxury cars right now.

It wouldn't surprise me if this was a cash for clunkers trade, but the dealer talked them out of it. If I had some spare money sitting around right now, I'd be bidding on this one.

it's at $2025, and reserve not met.

it looks good.

who has owned a v-8 w126 and sixer? for comparisons sake? i.e power/torque revving, gearing gas mileage comparison.

(by the way, let us be thankful it's not being referred to as a "v-6" ; so many advertisements these days for older benzes with, yes, "v-6"s. even w108, 109, w114's. could there have been some topsecret program in the 60's i wasn't aware of - nor the daimler-benz people - . always thought the v-6 a late 90's ? innovation.)

too bad its not black.

My point of reference is the 91 300SE and 94 S420 I owned. The 300SE got 16/19 mpg, the S420 got 15/20 mpg! Don't drive a 560SEL too often and the 300SE/L won't feel too slow. Second gear start kills the stop and go experience. Drag racer rear end ratio kills the freeway experience. Hard to believe the same engine in the W124 kicked 'vette butt in its day. My 300SE couldn't keep up with a V6 Camry. It's as fine a car as any W126 but my experience says the economy benefit isn't worth the performance and 'relaxedness' penalty.

I haven't owned a V8 or a 300SE/L. I've driven 500SELs, 560SECs and 420SELs and those V8's felt fast and effortless by 80's standards.

I came very close to buying a 1990 300SEL when I moved back to San Diego in 1999. The one I was interested in was in excellent condition, with 90k miles on the clock. Acceleration could best be described as "quite Relaxed".

I had recently driven a 1995 E320 and there was a big difference in feel between the two engines. The E320 gets up and runs, with power building right up until redline. In comparison, flooring the pedal in the 300SEL merely coaxes it into a faster walk. You never feel the push on your back. I even thought it seemed rather bland in comparison to a 300SD, even though the 300sel Actually reaches 60 sooner. Around town I appreciate the mid range torque surge in the turbo diesels, but the 300SEL makes a better high speed freeway cruiser.

I've thought of some theories for why there are so many well preserved 300s left. Because they accelerate rather leisurely, they appealed to the over 60 crowd.

From what I recall about the 300 gasers I've been in, very little engine noise was audible in the cabin, but what did make it through sounded good. There was no doubt it was a straight 6. Like all Mercedes, the gearing takes full advantage of output, for good high speed freeway cruising.

I only recall driving one 420SEL. It belonged to the mother of a friend of my best friend, and was almost brand new. I went directly from the drivers seat of my 300SD to the 420. The extra power of the V8 changed the whole experience. The smaller, leather wrapped steering wheel bore some responsibility for the difference in feel. It actually seemed to handle better because of the extra push from the rear wheels while accelerating out of corners. If not for the visual cues, you would have thought you were in a totally different car, as in, not even the same chassis.

The Euro tune 500SEL felt like a land rocket. I loved it! It put out gobs more power than a US Spec 500 or 560. But it cost more than twice as much for fuel compared to my 300SD. Some tanks returned 12 mpg, or less. And it had to have premium. Sadly that car had been driven very fast on wet, salty roads on the Autobahn. Because of that, every nook and cranny, had corrosion. The body and undercarriage were rusting on a 4 year old car. He sold it to a High School age boy, who was very happy to have it.

A 300 SE is a fine car to use as a daily driver. Fairly efficient for such a big car (I'd expect 18-24 mpg), and quite safe. This one's really nice looking-- if I had some extra bucks, I'd probably get it as a future car for my son, who is 12. I think the w126, especially the 300 gasser, is an almost ideal first car-- inexpensive to purchase, not too expensive to run, very safe and reliable, and a car to learn (a) how to drive with and (b) how to work on a car-- oil changes through brakes and on up. The other option I'd look at is a w124 300E/E320. Great cars and fun to drive!

Pfft, I don't care what you guys say. My '88 300SE isn't slow- that car just refuses to be hurried. When you're that classy, that's your right.

They aren't that slow. Especially when compared to diesels. I was just saying the power delivery is so linear that they feel slower than they are. And of course the SE is lighter than an SEL.

I like slow cars! They're so stately. My 240D is extremely stately.

Now that it didn't sell on Ebay, they have it listed for $6900 "Reduced". I really like the car. For one so well preserved, their asking price isn't too bad. I was guessing it was worth between $5500 and $7000 or so.
