Nice southern 300d for sale
I have zero interest in this car, was driving through Auburn, AL and it caught my eye at the corner of N Gay St and Opelika Rd. Nice 81 300d with no apparent rust or wear and nice paint. Just needs tires. I didn't drive it, so can make no comments, but it looks real nice. Just a few dash cracks, wood looks ok with a few cracks and the window scrapers are looking old. That's all I know, but wanted to post my find so it can get to a good home.

It is really nice, clean and straight. It is probably worth what he is asking... What is your basis for why it should be less? Nice ones are harder and harder to find.
Just speculating of course since I didn't drive it...

Just a hunch. Gotta be something wrong with this car. Seriously wrong.
Based on a google of the phone number I think Id want a 250 mile test drive to see whats up with it. It was blasted all over the net in late Feb at 5k with no takers. Coulda been pretty interesting if 3 or 4 ppl all came after it from the different sites! The car was up on ebay in Feb for 5K. http://columbusga.ebayclassifieds.com/classic-cars/auburn/1981-mercedes-benz-300d/?ad=2084068 And here in Feb for 5k http://www.automotix.net/bargain_cars/1981-mercedes_benz-300d-post-1935.html Gee.. and here too in Feb! http://www.vehix.com/inventory/details.aspx?sellerid=5F0000000400DF&radius=25&condition=Used&smodel=300-Series&make=Mercedes-Benz&Limit=25&SearchPagePosition=15&inventoryid=77000001AF5BEE&N=127%2B4294966616%2B121&path=%253FLimit%253D25%2526N%253D127%25252B4294966616%25252B121%2526Ns%253DpPriorityLevel%25257C1%25 257C%25257CHas%252520Price%25257C1%2526RadiusInMiles%253D25 How did he miss us ?? Interesting... Of course it wouldnt sell with all but one of the write-ups as they are sparse and no pictures provided. The ebay classifieds one is the only one with useful info... and then comes the issue. No brakes.
THere would be very few who would be willing to test drive a car with a bad brake booster. No test drive, tough to sell a $5k car... That is my hunch. But anyway, it is a nice looking car, even if something mechanically is shot, the body looks solid and original. If nothing else it would probably be a donor car. And to pay $5k for a car with no effective braking means that it is only going to be a local sale... I wouldnt drive it back to NJ like that without it being repaired. Anyway, interesting.

Silly to try to sell a nice clean car like that without fixing the brakes. 500 or less makes it a no excuses car, put new tires on it and you can get that kind of money probably for it....as it is you'll be lucky to ger 3000 for the less loved non turbo.
The non turbo though is a 500k plus motor with decent care. Is it ivory? One pic looks green, another grey but the closeup of the door looks ivory.

In the picture of the rear of the car I noticed a familiar site...just to the left of the plate is a tag used by a local dealer in South Carolina "A Dick Dyer Original". Dick Dyer owns a few different dealers in Columbia,SC...Toyota, Mercedes, Volvo. Chances are the dealership took that car in on a trade and sold it to the current owner for overpriced retail.

The color is a greyish, greenish tan, but more grey/green.

Quote:
Despite bad brakes, assuming that they were fixed and operated like new, the car would be a $5000 specimen, IMO.

30+ MPG...... And the usual 1,000,000 mileage B.S...
The person that owns this particular car or the person that put up the advertisement obviously knows nothing about them. The paint looks really good. Hard to tell in photos though. For that kind of money, all the systems should work flawlessly.

You can pick it apart all you want, I really don't care and have no interest.
But the paint and body did catch my eye, and checking it closer it didn't disappoint. That's all I'll say.
