Ok....I've found something locally....or should I say 're-found' something.

about 6-8 weeks ago, I ran across an 84 300D that is the true proverbial cream-puff...no kidding! 115K miles and garaged kept, perfect exterior. Perfect interior. Talked to mechanic that worked on the car.

A/C system rebuilt, tranny seals replaced...along with other seals (owner DID NOT want oil in the driveway)

...bottom line, the car is nearly mint. It all works and it all works perfectly and looks the a gem on top of it all (it's that grey/brownish color - forget what it's called).

But the clincher.....

$8K

He honestly, won't bore you with the personal details of why, is needing to sell the car.

This is about a grand over my budget but it is the cheapest cherry I've been able to find....PLUS it's local...PLUS I know the MB mechanic that did the work on it and he's vouched for its condition.

Would I be insane to pay this much for the car?

Bill, I just responded and had the same PM line limitation problem so I sent it via email...

But, I'll make some additional comments here too.

About the mechanic thing...I do have a 2nd MB specialist shop here that I trust that can do an 'independant' inspection. For this kind of money, I'd be dumb not to spend another $150 for a full inspection.

I did forget to mention one fairly important detail; this guy's a retired 'having fun golfing' guy that buys and sells MBs on the side...small numbers, ie. not making a living off of it.

I have it through several sources that his new asking price is pretty much what he's 'got' in the car. He's bought himself a 300SD and needs to get rid of the smaller car. The 300D was orignally a keeper for himself; hence the reason it was restored so well.

Bottom line, I'm not sure if or how much lower he's willing to go...it looks like he'd be losing money going any cheaper.

Ok Bill....I think I've managed to re-contain myself...again Thank you for the reality check.

I'm just getting SO discouraged in my search....
I've heard from many in the mb newsgroup also that I should be able to find a great one for under $6k too....

It's just that I haven't seen a SINGLE great one for anywhere near that price.....ever.

I've found myself bouncing around looking at 190's, 260E's, etc...due to my discouragement...but those all end up being even more $$ than a 300D in the kind of shape I'm looking for....

BTW...all the 123's at this place are $10K asking price except the gold 300CD which they want $15K....

Supposedly, they are all in near showroom condition inside/out.
This is an example of the kind of stuff I've been finding.
