'87 300D 5 SPD Short Sale

It's time to let it go..

'87 300D, 135-150k, black, 5 spd swap.

Currently sitting on jack stands behind my house in Indianapolis. Stuck in reverse, but I have another transmission in the garage for it. I don't feel like messing with it. Runs great, #14 head without any problems. Was a daily driver several times. I've replaced several parts, would need to find a list to post. Has a one season old set of snow tires on it now. No other wheels/tires. Little jack point rust. Originally from Va. I drove it here a few years ago.

It needs to go away ASAP, like over the weekend. Come Monday I will sell it to the local yard for scrap!

$800 obo.

If I scrap it; I'll pull some small stuff off to sell separately(ie. vac pump), and/or keep(window motors). I will try to snap a couple pics Friday.. really depends on interest.

Put the good transmission in it, which I have, and you can drive it. Still has some minor loose ends that need worked out in regards to the swap. But WILL run/drive very well as a daily with a simple transmission swap.

Here is the swap details:

I just sold my 300d, and got a 2006 civic that ive had for about 2 months, and despite the good fuel economy, im going back to MB. (mainly bc I dont drive 500mi a week anymore) but you can sure as hell bet that if I had a house w/garage here at Miami in Oxford, id be all over your 300d.

Yes sir...

It's in the way, I may have to move soon... only job offers I'm getting are out of state, oh and Afghanistan:rolleyes:

Maybe, just maybe, if I get high enough on caffeine this weekend... I'll swap the transmissions and try to sell it as running and driving.

Don't feel too bad.. I'm purging a bunch of stuff. I'm feverishly trying to fix all the old tube amp projects I have so I can sell them. Getting out of model airplane.. Ham radio stuff. Only down to one .45 handgun.

There is a slim chance I might go to Rio de Janeiro and live for awhile too:eek:

That's much too nice of a 124 to scrap...hopefully you can get the working trans into it and reconsider. Regardless, best of luck with the job hunt and life transition!

lt1fire 09-29-2012 07:41 PM

ahhh where is my extra $$$.... I want to do this exact swap to my SDL

1977busman 09-30-2012 12:50 PM

I would think that SOMEONE would want to pick this up. Ashedd, if it gets down to the end and your definitely going to scrap it, shoot me an email and ill borrow a buddies truck and rent a Uhaul trailer. And piss some people off back home, when I let it sit in the back yard until winter break... Just bought an 85 300sd, why not have 3 cars at once...
Speaking of that, the 06 civic is still for sale:D

Honestly though, you just need to make a weekend project to swap the other trans in, and put it on Ebay. People will go nuts over it... That would at least net you a bit more cash when you sold it. My 87 300d similar miles to yours and condition sold for $3850 with a Automatic, and I only listed it for 3 days...

Why must I be a poor college student and the thing be halfway across the country!!!! I want this car!

t walgamuth 09-30-2012 08:21 PM

I'd snap it up but have too much on my plate.

If someone in FL wanted it (thedon?) and could move in the next couple of days i could drop it in the pensacola area about thursday at my sons house on my way to Texas to pick up Randy Leo's wagon.....;)

Thats tempting, very tempting.I wish I could, I really really do but I just have no time and money is reserved for school :( Why!!

I'd need to get up there, swap transmissions and drive it home, pending nothing goes wrong with the swap.

TheDon 09-30-2012 10:17 PM

I want it!!!!.... Wait.. I dont know... Just dont send it to the crusher!!!

jusme 09-30-2012 10:21 PM

If I could figure out logistics, I would get it in a second. But Virginia's far away...

ashedd 09-30-2012 11:17 PM

Well I'm fully recovered from my weekend drinking...

I will check my pm's now, so standby. Doesn't look like it's going to get crushed on monday anyway.. but next week WILL determine it's fate.

One major reason why I dont want to swap transmissions, as soon as I test drive it, I'll wanna keep it.

ashedd 10-01-2012 12:17 AM

Due to interest, I will give more info.

I bought the car in Virginia Beach when I was there playing Army. It had major electrical issues and the guy that had it was at a loss. I rebuilt about 1/3rd of the wiring harness. Seems to mostly stem from a botched stereo install, since I have an avionics background it wasn't a big deal to fix it. I never finished the circuits for the pass door switches, so only the drivers door will turn the dome light on. I drove this car back home to Indianapolis, in 10 hours(I was moving pretty quick), in it's original configuration. It has always been a very tight/fun car to drive. I suspect someone always kept up on it's maint. It came with NO records.

In VA I replaced; vac pump, window reg, window motor, brake pad, rotors, calipers, syrp belt, belt tensioner with pulley, coolant sys flush, T stat, flex disks(*see below), rt tie rod ass'y, drag link, steering dampner, blower motor(which I robbed for my TE. But does have a working used one installed) um... and some other stuff I can't really recall. I should have the receipts for what I bought. Of course being an acft mechanic, I did all my own work at the base DIY auto garage.

Once home I drove it a lot. Then it started getting hot outside and I switched to something with working a/c. I spent the winter doing the transmission swap, which you can read about in the swap thread in the OP. Once I was done with the swap I drove it again until a driveline vibration caused me to park it. Tracked the issue down to the rear diff, which was way too tall anyway. I replaced the diff with a lower one, and had to switch to the smaller driveshafts of the 190e. The transmission also started grinding into 2nd gear. I decided the other 5 spd I had on hand, from a 190e 2.3, was the preferred one to use with the new rear diff ratio(3.23 I think). I still drove it occasionally, slowly loosing interest.. then it got stuck in reverse.

I put it on jackstands( really miss the lifts of the base garage) and pulled the shifter/linkahe, and driveshaft. It's now magically no longer stuck in reverse, even though I messed with the shift linkage a whole bunch try to fix it. But the transmission is suspect anyway, and it leaks from the rear seal.

So It's on stands, minus the driveshaft and shifter/linkage.

What does it need? Transmission swap, shifter/linkage install, DS install, cross support install, bleed clutch, re-hang exhaust, test drive.

What does it need to 100% the swap? New larger clutch, buy the right cross support for a 5 spd 300E, swap transmission output yoke AND rear diff input yoke to the original larger ones used with the om603, install original large diameter drive shaft... AND have the proper large yoke welded to the front shaft. This is where you enter into the custom DS arena.

Exterior: It has not been washed or waxed in over a year! Jack points have some rust. Clear coat was iffy on the trunk, so I tried to wet sand it down.. and never finished(shocker huh?). So the trunk is hazy. A few years ago a storm came through and dropped a large tree limb on the hood/left fender. There is a softball size dent on top of the fender, and multiple smaller dents on the hood. I always figured I would replace the hood with a 94/95 when I found one. It had depo headlights, but I finally broke down and stole them for my TE. I have a set of DOT headlights to go with it, but one headlight door is total toast.

Interior: It's gray text in good shape. Steering wheel is really nice and from a 94 E320. Wood is so so, I thought it was a good idea to strip it and stain it ebony. It didn't turn out all that great. Dash is cracked but filled in. I would likely pull my stereo stuff. I put two speaker holes under the compartment between the rear headrests. Kinda ugly but you cant see it with the lid down. I could be persuaded to let go of the black leather seats I have from a E420, as well as the door panels, dash, A,B,C pillar plastic, visors, hvac wood.

Engine: IP was leaking but has since been resealed, not a drop since. All automatic transmission systems have been removed: cooling lines to rad, vac modulator on IP, all vac lines and ufo. Also removed is the flapper valve BS from under the air box. All that remains is a much simplified vac system. Has always had a slightly delayed shutoff action. Minor exhaust leak at the turbo accordion pipe. No hood pad.

I will go out Monday and get some pics.

PS:

I'll do the transmission swap and test drive for the right price.

And for an even better price, I will put the mostly black interior in it.

TheDon 10-01-2012 07:54 AM

How about $900. That's a price and I spelled it "right"?

ashedd 10-01-2012 09:22 PM

Pics

Pics show black backseat installed, and one black door panel. I did this awhile ago to get a feel for how it would look. I also forgot to get pics of the jack points on the right side.
