FS: 1983 200D (W123 Euro import, German model) - project car

Originally sold in Germany, imported by the first owner, I am the third. It was a fun car but only 59HP with a very tall rear differential, which makes it even more ridiculous on the highway than a 240D! It would top out at 80mph which was the maximum the car was rated for. The air conditioning looked to be an aftermarket addition or replacement, and furthermore was not working, so I removed most of it. I used it as a daily driver until some bolt on the engine came loose and oil started shooting out of the hole. I didn't notice the oil pressure drop and just noticed that the engine was knocking at a stop sign. I subsequently found tiny metal shavings when I drained the remaining oil and put in fresh. I believe the camshaft journals are what ended up damaged and will need replaced, if you wish to use the original engine. It does run and drive now, but doesn't sound good so I have just had it parked for the last few years.

I do have a 2.4L engine from a 240TD (also euro import), should you wish to buy that also to swap into this car, and I think I have the rear differential from that car as well.

The car has a 4-speed manual transmission, manual windows, manual sunroof, manual antenna, manual climate control, and forest green paint in very good condition. The car spent most of it's life in Texas, and does not have any rust issues - the chassis is *very* good and would make a great candidate for rebuilding the original engine, or swapping out and turning into a 240D or 300D. The original interior was cloth palomino, however I sourced and swapped in green cloth seats (with older-style headrests and thicker seatbacks which I preferred) and a lot of other green interior parts. The green interior matches the green paint very well, but it could be restored to original condition very easily. I will include all the original palomino parts with the car if desired, or you can complete the transformation to a green interior which I believe would be the best. I also replaced plain black plastic trim with zebrano, which really helps the car look nicer (yes, I even managed to find a zebrano center console trim which only has the 2 holes for the fader and hazard switch!). However, I can include the original black plastic trim. I also have replacement dash trim which is black vinyl with chrome bezel, which can replace the zebrano dash wood if you really want to go for a basic look. Also have brand new OEM replacement vinyl boot for the shifter, along with a couple aftermarket leather ones in new condition should you wish to use those instead.

Rear bumper is the original euro bumper (and there is a trailer hitch, haha), but the front bumper is a US-spec bumper that should be replaced with a euro model. It also has US headlamps, but I have euro headlamps that I can possibly include with the car for the right price. Instrument cluster has a 120mph speedometer, and the car has just over 200k miles.

Anyways this car is special and has a lot of potential, but needs a new owner with time and inclination to restore/rebuild it. It will include a nearly brand new set of Michelin Harmony tires on 5.5" wide aluminum steel-look rims with green hubcaps that match the paint.

Not sure what to ask for this so just putting it out here to gauge interest, please make any offer that you feel reasonable, and I will most likely just sell it to the highest offer or whomever seems to offer the most promising new home for it. As mentioned it *can* be driven safely enough if you prefer, though the engine does not sound good when you do and it may not be ideal for the engine; I'm also happy to help with shipping arrangements.

The only pictures I have now show the original interior (which I am happy to include), but I can/will get more pictures of the current state of the car with green interior and zebrano trim upgrades soon. The exterior looks identical to these pictures though as it has been stored in a garage. Please let me know any requests for specifics that you would like photographed.

wow!

that is such a great color combo, I really like.

I have the perfect donor drivetrain for it, but sadly no budget for additional projects at the moment though

If I weren't over loaded with cars I'd want it too.

Took a few pictures last night, sorry for the lousy lighting but you can see some of the green interior and zebrano wood upgrades that are in place now - mainly just the floor mats (the green ones are outstanding condition), seats, and door panels. As mentioned I have all the original palomino ones stored as well:

This thing's pretty cool. It's a shame you're not in South Carolina. I'm afraid that the price of shipping the car would not make the deal worth it for you or I. Shame too, as I have an OM616 sitting on the floor of my garage with a head that's just fine.
