1979 300SD for sale

No, I'm not selling MY car!

Actually, I'm helping my girlfriend's mother sell hers (which is pretty much just like mine, with better paint! ), and I'm hoping doing so will make life easier for me when she's my mother-in-law in a year or so! hahaha....

OK, here's everything I know about it:

It has a palomino-color interior, which is in great shape. There is the usual tear in the left-hip bolster of the driver's seat, but otherwise the upholstery is excellent. A couple of small cracks in the top of the dashpad, but it's better than usual. The wood is also much better than usual.

The paint and body are VERY smooth. Nice shine to the paint...It must have been repainted a few years ago, but there's no documentation of that. I seriously doubt it's the original paint...it looks too good. I believe it's still the original color, though. There is a little rust in the lower portion of both quarter panels, from the usual spot where water accumilates in the trunk, but it's not out of control yet...a good body shop could easily fix it. When standing and looking at the car, it's barely visible on one side, and almost not visible at all on the other side, unless you bend over and look behind the wheel. I do not see any rust in the floorpans.

Those of you familiar with the servo-controlled ACC systems will be shocked to hear that the climate controls all WORK flawlessly! I know, it's hard to believe!....hahaha....Cold AC, and good heat! I'm pretty sure it's already been converted to 134.

It has good glow plugs, fairly new starter, strong battery, and it fires right up. Those of you from up north will be happy to know that it has a block heater, but I don't think it would need it unless it was VERY cold out...I know that they have never had to use it.

The sunroof is a little slow....probably just needs to be cleaned and greased.

Power antenna works, but doesn't go all the way down.

All the windows work.

The vacuum locks worked until recently.... a dried-out and leaking vacuum diaphragm in one of the doors is the usual culprit...an easy fix.

All other buttons and gadgets seem to be in working order.

Has an aftermarket stereo....an old Kenwood tape deck. Not glamorous, but it works.

Transmission shifts solidly, and the front suspension is tight....must have had ball joints, etc. done in recent years. Again, there's no documentation of this, but looking at and driving the car, it obviously has been well cared for by the current owners, and previously. It has been garage kept the entire time that my girlfiend's mom has owned it.

Even the tachometer works, which you all know is rare. And the clock works.

Don't know about the cruise control.

The odometer says approx. 337,000.

It is my belief that either the car does not have the original engine, or it has been rebuilt, or the instrument cluster is not the original, because the engine runs like it has much lower mileage. It pulls stronger in 1st gear than my SD does, and there's very litte smoke....less than my own SD, which has about 60,000 fewer miles on it! Leaks a couple of drops of oil when sitting, but not a large amount by any means.

I think it is a very straight, well-maintained SD....I'd love to have it myself, but I don't have the extra $$ right now.

They bought it a year or two ago, on my recommendation, and they've enjoyed it, but now they have the "new Mercedes itch", so they want to sell the SD and use the $$ as a downpayment on a new car.

They have a clear title for it.

They are asking $3,900, slightly less than they paid for it....I think it's worth it. Like I said, wish I had the extra $$ right now....

The car can be seen and driven in Marietta, GA (a few miles north of Atlanta). Anyone who's interested e-mail me or PM me and I can answer questions, and/or get you in touch with the owners.

The only pictures I have are old ones....from the day I went to look at it for them before they bought it....It's a little dirty in these pictures, but now it's nice and detailed. These will get the point across, anyway....

Mike

The console is now cleaned and no longer looks "chalky" like it does in this photo.

For some reason in this photo it looks like there is a color match problem, but it doesn't looks this way in person. I dunno why.

A few nibbles lately, but no bites....

So, they have reduced the price to $3,500.

It is a darn nice SD...I wish the paint on mine was as good.

Anyone?

Car looks beautiful... nice condition. I like the interrior, but the exterrior color would take some time for me to get used to. However, the overall condition looks really nice.

Yeah, the color is an issue for some people...It's a "love it or hate it" color for many folks. It's really not quite as yellowish as it looks in the photos...it's more of a dark ivory or straw color...It's only a shade or two darker than the color of my car, which MB calls "light ivory".

I dunno....MB had some wierd colors in the 70s! hahaha....But I like a lot of them. I like the powder blue that they did back then, and that wierd "booger green" color...It's the gold and bronze shades that don't do it for me....or brown...I've never been a fan of brown.

I like the color, fiitting for that era.

I can tell that's it's been repainted, but looks OK. Too bad the car isn't closer. Then again, if it was in the midwest, it would be full of rust holes.

There's minor rust in the extreme lower part of the quarter panels, but I'm sure it's nothing like you're used to seeing up there in the Arctic!

Hey, I can probably deliver for a small fee, or at least meet you halfway or something....I have family in Kentucky that I could visit while I'm at it.

I'm putting a new roof on my house in the next few weeks, so money is tight. BUT -- if MoparMike wants to buy my '69 Fleetwood, I would be seriously interested. Oh Mike!!!

There's a '73 450SE on Ebay in Milyukee that I have my eye one -- 120k miles or so. But again, I gotta dump something -- maybe that Mercury I have could go.

Shoot, if I were to buy it, I'd fly there and drive it back. Gotta meet all the Hotlanta MB'ers.
