who says a 2.5 turbo diesel cant be 400hp?!

Ummm....:
1) That's a 3.0L, OM603 engine, stuffed into a red W201 chassis 2) The black W201 has a 3.0L, 24v, OM606 engine! 3) They had to totally remove the AC condenser to make room for the intercooler 4) Note that the boost hit almost 30psi (2 bar) while driving! I wonder what ECM they are using? I'd figure one out of a w210. Maybe the computer is retuned with software for that specific setup.
In the video it smokes wayy too much, yielding unburned fuel. I've always wondered if there was a way to add a turbo to mine without going the full 9 yards like on a stock OM606 Turbo.... Some way to mechanically limit the boost so that it compensates for say the atmospheric vaccuum created from the intake process. Something where I don't need an intercooler or extensive reworking. Keeping the cross-over intake plumbing I have just adding a bend to it to direct the compressed air? I am new to the world or turbo's and diesels, but does this sound far-fetched? A nice Garret T03 that spools up quickly to give it just a nice pick-up off the line. It's somwhat of a dog from idle but once she revvvv's up she a sleeper :D |

I don't know if I'd argue with Markku - note his location!! :D :D And he's correct, the 606 pump is still largely mechanical. I assume they've deleted the electronic controls, which if similar to the 603, are a luxury - not a necessity. How the heck did they retain air conditioning though? There's no room for the giant intercooler, condenser, radiator, and electric fan...! The 722.3 auto tranny (in the 124 with a 603) was also used in the 500E, E60 AMG, SL600, etc and can take the power if beefed up accordingly.
What I'd like to know is what kind of power gain I can get out of a 603.960 with the STOCK turbo, pump and injectors... just by adding an intercooler and tweaking the full-load fuel delivery, WITHOUT sacrificing fuel economy. I know at least 20% gain is feasible with no major mods, but I don't know how MPG suffers, or how much more gain can be had. Hmmm. michakaveli - you can't bolt on a turbo to your non-turbo engine. The turbo engines have oil cooled pistons and stronger internals to take the power. Slapping a turbo on would very likely destroy the bottom end in short order, or if not, it would drastically reduce the lifespan of the engine. Much better to swap the whole engine to a 606.96x, or just trade up to a 98/99 model that came stock with the turbo (and then slap a chip in the sucker! :D) :cool: :cool: |

But what I want to know is how much torque is he getting?
Unburnt fuel in a gasser is black smoke. In a diesel its blue-ish white, like burning oil in a gasser. Black smoke in a diesel means he's burning a lot of fuel. Smoke color is pretty much backwards between gassers and diesels. I remember somebody did a computer model of diesel output power and boost pressure. They got increasing power to 100psi and the computer ran out of power. |
Nooo.... in a diesel, blue smoke is still engine oil. Black smoke is unburned fuel (rich) or carbon deposits / soot burning out. White smoke can be either excess fuel (in some conditions, usually at cold start?) but is more often coolant. The black smoke in the video is from excess fuel, or put another way, not enough air, or not cold enough air (need some vehicle speed to get airflow through the intercooler).

My point was raw fuel coming out of a gasser is black, raw fuel coming out of a diesel is blue. And what vegetable oil looks like I don't know. I also think some of the smoke in the video is burning rubber.
