Help!!My E420 is leaking.

Hello,
A couple of days ago, I noticed a big oil stain on the floor of my garage, it smelled like power steering fluid, so I checked the reservior, it was low, so I topped it. Later on when I was driving the car, smoke started coming from under the engine, it looked like the fluid was leaking onto the exhaust. Now that the fluid has been completely burnt off, it's no longer smoking. I remember having a similar problem a couple of years ago with my 190, the mech told me it was a transmission leak and fixed it for $400.

Can anyone tell me more about this problem and how much they paid to fix it.

The E Class book says it might be a leak from a bad power steering hose.

No more MB Autowerks, so I'm trying to diagnose the problem before I take it to a mech.

Thanks for any help you can give. It's a 1994 MB E420.

PS Pump / seals a known weakness

Hopefully it's just the seals for the power steering pump. This is a known weak area on the car.

You can purchase a pump seal kit from Fastlane for about $25. I believe that installation takes about 1-2 hours. Luckily the previous owner had this work done on my car, so I'm uncertain about the labor.

The M119 engine's crowded nature makes it hard to get a good look at problems. Try to verify where the leak is coming from. Maybe you have a worn hose that has given up. But - most likely it's the pump seals.
