Steering wheel for 16v

Hi all,

I'd like a steering wheel for my 2.5-16v, as the existing one (390mm I believe) is just a bit too big - I am 6 foot 2" and my legs hit it when I change gear, and it's generally rather big for such a tight handling car .

What do people suggest? I hate the part-metal steering wheels, they just look wrong in a Mercedes, so what is there that's a bit smaller, and doesn't look completely out of place, like it's just come out of a NASCAR?

Here's a fairly nice example of what's nice, on a Toyota Celica:

A fairly understated but good-to-hold (held one today) wheel, stitched leather, with nice grips. I don't much care for three spokes though.

Anyone have any pictures of what they've fitted to their cars?

Russell

The 92-93 sportline had a smaller diameter wheel, but I hear the top of it blocks the instruments on a 16v.

'Sportline' wheels I thought were all 390 mms... some of the newer MB wheels appear to be even smaller diameter but fitment may or may not work on an older car like yours. You want airbag functionality?

Maybe look at a 'MOMO' wheel...some of them have flat bottoms ala F1 style in all sorts of configurations, sizes and colors. Their products are really nice quality and I'm sure you'd find one that's perfect for the MB. No airbags usually though I may be wrong.

From time to time, an AMG wheel (made by Momo) will show up on German eBay. It will block the view of the top of the speedo, tach and most importantly, the "low fuel" warning lamp, but it's very nice and period correct.

Yes the sportline wheels are very nice, but the same size unfortunately

I'll keep searching.

Anyone know what size the AMG steering wheel is? And does it bolt straight up?

Exclamation

Try the aftermarket!
INstalled many Nardi's on cars w/o air bags!

Here in the States there is a company called GRANT & they supply many options & an adaptor for MB.

The AMG wheel in my picture is 14.75" at the outer edge. It does require the Momo wheel adapter for the W201/124, which seems to be going for approx. $50 at different sites.

The Nardi wheels, particularly the classic wood rim and tri-spoke wheels are a natural choice for 60's and 70's vintage cars, but they tend to be as large, or larger, than the OEM Mercedes steering wheels.

MY '87 Cossie came with a smaller sports wheel,(complete with Mercedes badge) but blocked the top of the instruments so I have fitted a std wheel, I am 185cm (5'10")
