Exclamation How to remove AMG duck tail from W124 trunk lid?

Hi all,

I picked up a W124 trunk lid with an AMG duck tail mounted. Problem is, I'm having an awful time trying to remove the silly thing without damaging it. Anyone BT, DT, and have some tips? I don't mind if the trunk lid is damaged in the process, but I *really* don't want to mess up the duck tail!! I don't know what kind of adhesive was used but it seems like concrete. What kind of thin, flexible tool would slide underneath and cut through the glue? I've tried assorted sharp knives, putty knives, etc with basically no luck. I can get through a little on the outer edges but not far enough in to detach it. I can't pry too hard or the plastic starts to deform and I already caused a tiny crack - don't want to repeat that, d'oh...

Help!!

have you tried heating the lid up with a hair dryer or something and using wd40 or some goo gone trying to get it betweenthe wing and the lid?

IF you warm it up, not piping hot, but just a little hotter than warm, but not too hot to touch, it may soften the glue a bit.

I think the adhesive if I am correct is this crazy german stuff. some of it came with my zender wing, but I did not use it, because I figured it has a couple of nuts holding it on, so I used double sided 3m exterior adhesive tape, works great.

Not sure what else I can tell yout hat will help.

you putting the ducktail on another car?

I'll try adhesive remover and heat and see how that works. I bought the ducktail used, but it came attached to a trunk lid... but I don't want to swap lids, I want to remove the ducktail, paint it separately, then install it on my blue diesel. At least that's the plan. I've already got the AMG side skirts and rear bumper (nothing is installed yet)... just need the front bumper and I'll have a full kit.

Others methods to try....

The way dealer signs are removed is to use fishing leader or dental floss. If still too hard and you need to 'saw' through the adhesive try using very small diameter cable with a loop on each end to hold onto. Some camping/outdoor stores sell a saw that can be packed into your pocket. It consists of a rough edge cable with rings and can be rolled up, very flexible and coarser than
just a cable.
The latter may be the way to try and it may also cut into the paint of the decklid but save the spoiler which is harder to find. I'd like one for my 400E if you find another!!

Good luck,

I think the AMG duck tails look sooooooooooooooooooooo hot on a nice w124 with a body kit and a nice set of Carlsson Evolution wheels. YUM! The fact that your car is a 300D makes it even more delicious!
