I need help modifiing my w124.

I am a teenage owner of a 1986 300e. this was my first car and i got it in crappy condition so now it must be replaced (to be restored or modified later). i was so impressed with the 124 that i now have a 1992 400e. i would like to upgrade it a little. i heard that one of the quickest ways to "soup" this up was to change the rear end for a bigger ratio. i just want to know which would be the easiest to swap, ei: 500e/e500 diff. if someone could give me advice and some gear ratios from similar drivetrains it would be greatly appreciated.
