I'm going back on the dyno tomorrow. I'm wondering if anyone with the TT kit has found that the setup can be adjusted to get boost going at low rpms. I don't get out of vacuum until I'm nearly at 4000 rpms and then I get a surge of power. I'd like to get it to come on a bit more in the 2500-3000 rpm range with a less steep power curve.

I start developing boost below 2000RPM....
I was at full 7.5lb boost at 3750RPM

Are you using the TT coil hoses for the intake along with the Fram panel filter ?
The TT supplied intake and boost tubing along with the filter is extremely restrictive.

I picked up about 40HP between the initial dyno run with the TT supplied tubing and the modification with the K&N filter, silicone and aluminum intake and boost tubing.

Have you checked for boost leaks?
Are you using the TT chassis mount intercooler?
Determined if you have too great of a pressure drop at the intercooler?

Ed

Ed - I have replaced the intake tubing with aluminum and smooth silicone. I also have the same air filter you are using. Yes, I am using the TT intercooler mounted under the intake/filter housing.

I have not checked for boost leaks other than by examining the various hoses and connections to see that they are tight and have found nothing amiss. Is there a way to definitively look for leaks? A smoke test, perhaps?

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by a pressure drop at the intercooler.

Mark

By the way, here's a vote for the M103. The guy from the tuner shop just called to report on the leak down test they did. That 24 year old engine is amazing. Every cylinder leaked either 2 or 3% with an error range of plus or minus 2%.

The fuel mixture is now considerably leaner than it was and it is making 227 up at the wheels. I'll let it run like this for a bit with an eye on the acts and then up the boost maybe a quarter turn on the mbc. With the leaner mixture and this cold air, the torque on this car has gotten crazy strong. It's truly a hoot to drive. I'm going to have to get to a track and time it.

I leaned out considerably when the cold weather set in, too. At 10 degree F not having an intercooler isn't much of an issue. I've been using an octane booster too for the last several tanks as insurance on the warmer days. At a mile high they consider 91 octane "high test". I'm gonna have to come up with a timing retard solution for the coming summer to avoid dumping a ton of fuel at it.

a guy overhear on the mbclub fourum has an original 103 turbo technics convertion with 170,000 miles on it.

it out performs his 124 e500 in side to side comparison.

he still as the coil tube pipeing and 1990's pigy back and that car makes boost in the teens as well.

Nick - I'm getting 7.5 psi with the MBC turned all the way down, as far as it will go! So I can't help but think that I'll get into the teens once I get it opened up.

I'm also not getting boost to show up on the gauge in the lower rpms. Ed has it earlier, but I haven't figured out why.

you may need to adjust the rods that connect from the wastegates to the pressure 'thingys' (cant remember their name)

when i first fitted my kit i had to alter mine, cant remember if it was lengthen or shorten, some know all will probably chime in and tell you.

any way, apparently tt set these rods to only alow 7ish psi, the turbos will got higher. they are held in place with small 'c' clips and I lost loads of the clips down the back of the engine trying to refit, it is a right pain in the ass job!

Good luck! Anybody from the board bidding? After all you've gone through with getting that car to where it is, this must feel like amputation to you!

Here's the latest dyno chart. Still making 400rwhp but could be making 500rwhp if I simply upgraded the injectors so that it could rev all the way to redline.
