I got my 500SEL used. The previous owner put a universal type muffler on it. I really don't like the sound of it. I figure rather than get an OEM one, I should just get an aftermarket one.
What would the average price for a nice one that really had that V8 growl I hear on other cars (not necessarily Mercedes)?

Try a magnaflow. My brother had one put on his range rover. the thing sounds sweet and mean now.
IT definately growls with authority. I think he didn't spend much on it, like maybe $150 or so. Install also cost a bit, and tips were extra, but I think he spent around $300 for his setup.... included a lot of new pipe though in the underside of the car. Alon

Now would I need a cat back or a just a muffler? I looked at the Magnaflow web site and see that they don't offer cat backs for Mercedes. I am considering a TimeValve.

Well for sound you could use a magnaflow rear muffler.
Universal probably. Either way, I would go to a custom muffler shop that does good custom work, and explain to them how you want it, and I am sure they can put something together for you. Timevalve is very good, and you can't go wrong there. Alon

When the 380SE needed a new exhaust system, a local muffler shop was able to install a freer-flowing cat and larger piping than stock (have to check)...basically, a semi-custom system.
BUT....it cost $1500 with installation.... -Sam |

Yes $1500 is a little steep for me. I think I might take Alon's advice and just get universal installed by a muffler shop.

If you want a growl don't get a oem you can barely hear it even when you stomp on it. (unless there is a hole somewhere)
Just my 2 cents BTW Midas charged my dad 600 dollars for the dual resinators on the 500 back in 93. I hate to think what the whole muffler would cost. http://wwww.1985500selbenz.homestead.com/muffler.html |
