Regular M104 Sump vs AMG 104 Sump

This is how different the AMG M104 Sump is vs the normal M104 Sump.
Both Sumps have same part number and i looked at three different sumps and all where like the normal M104 while the AMG sump has a more agressive windage scoops. What do u think guys??

interesting. If part numbers are the same, I'd assume they're similar, part numbers for the pumps are the same as well and afaik they only made two separate size pumps for the M103/M104. Are they the same year?

Interesting. Are they the same depth? I know the M103 pans are deeper than the 104 pans, but are those pans the same depth?

My guess is that your AMG pan looks the way it does because it just happens to be from a later car. I'd be willing to bet that ALL of the later M104s look like that, even the non-AMG ones. That paper about the AMG C36 that someone linked (maybe it was you Jay) didn't say anything about a C36 AMG specific oil pan.

It's also my understanding that the early M104s had the exact same oil pan as the M103 did but the M104s had the added benefit of a genuine windage tray attached to the bottom of the engine.

This begs a bigger question though: Why are you inside your C36's engine? What happened? Please post a bunch of pictures of the insides of that puppy so we all can learn from it!
Regards, Eric

m103 and m104 oil pans are different because of the difference in the timing chain (single vs double).

Eric as it turns out that M104 pan on the w202 has had five different part numbers with the one in the pic being the latest so it seems u have a point. thou i could swear i matched 2 oil pans shoing the exact same part numb and yet the insides where not the same.

As to y i am looking for an oil pan well i smashed my old oil sump and i need a replacement.

I hope you didn't fall off the road, but I can imagine you find unusual bits and pieces on the road when not expecting them. I lived in Greece in the late 60's so I can imagine the roads are similar

bob they seem to be of exact same size, there is a sump special for the w140 M104 which has a larger middle pan and its further in the mid and cant fit the w202.

My two pans, M103 (W201) and M104 (W124) are most definitely of different depths, as well as lengths for the cam chain. If you look at the oil pump on each you can see that there is probably a 5-6mm lip on the bottom of the cap on the M103 pickup while the M104 pickup has been cut flush, more or less. Since the oil capacity of the two engines is the same, I presume they shortened the pan since more of the oil will be in the engine at any one time so that the oil level relative to the pickup is the same even though the oil requirement of the M104 is greater.

Fully aware of the W140 mid sump pans, as well as the oil pumps with the foot long pickup.
